VPN websites

After a little help/guidance if anyone could help.

I am interested in purchasing a VPN. When I try to access the websites for NordVPN and ExpressVPN, the sites won’t load. I have recently changed my broadband provider and there is a filter which means we can’t access adult content until later at night. I thought it may be this blocking them, however, when I check on my phone (on the same network), NordVPN will load, but ExpressVPN still won’t.

I am using the Brave browser. I also tried this on Edge. Not working on either.

I also have McAfee installed.

Any suggestions welcome

Ok, this sounds like such a weird issue. Are you having issues with any other site? I would go in every site you know just to make sure. Since you ISP blocks adult content, it’s very likely they also block Vpns, but that is a conversation to be had with your isp, so please contact them.

Whenever you go to these sites and they won’t load what does the message say? Does it say that nordvpn.com can’t be resolved or does it say nordvpn.com took to long to respond.

Probably an ISP issue but do you have any ad blocker installed on your browser or could you temporarily disable your McAfee AV?

Why are you buying internet service like this? How old are you?

Someone based is preventing you from paying to have your data stolen

It is a weird one. I’ve tried all usual websites and they work on my laptop. Just the VPN ones don’t - Nord, Express and Surf Shark.

On my phone though, Nord and Surf Shark work, but Express won’t load.

Error code I get on my laptop is - ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT

I have no connection issues or proxy’s set up. Just a plain old home broadband connection

No that I am aware of. Wouldn’t want to disable the anti virus to be honest. I am going to use the VPN device through McAfee, this with the anti virus should be adequate

Can you turn on data and turn off wifi on your phone to see if you can access express on it?

This is definitely a call to your ISP. There’s alot that goes into your network and they know it must of all. However, they might not be helpful depending on who they are

That’s cool, if it doesn’t work, try checking your AV privacy settings to see if they are being blocked by that. Also, if you disable your McAfee AV you should still be protected by Windows defender AV so you’re not too at risk

Yeah when I turn WI-FI off on my phone it loads so it would suggest my ISP. Pain!

I do have McAfee VPN. Is this any use? Compare to the likes of Nord, Express etc…

Thank you. Will take a look. Going to ring the ISP at some point today to ask the question as well

I mean it’s a VPN. All a VPN is going to do is route your traffic through another persons internet, so it appears to other sites that you are accessing it through that person. Everything else a specific VPN offers is just extra stuff you probaly won’t need. It’s all just marketed in a way that you would need it.

Do you have McAfee VPN activated? Like, is it on? I was suggesting calling your ISP, because they could probably help troubleshoot this issue alot better than we could. But, it doesn’t nessesarily mean that it’s their fault.

At the minute the McAfee VPN isn’t on. From what I’ve read, I was lead to believe that other more dedicated VPN services like Nord, Express etc… would be better. Not sure how true that is.

I’m basically just after extra protection and I want to download TOR and look around.

All vpns will have the same functionality at the core. All of them will do the same thing. But, other options such as picking your region or shit like that is just extra options. Those options are just marketed heavily because that’s what makes them different from all the other vpns.

Tor is a different matter. Tor is its own security. You might want to look up tor network or I think it’s called Tor circuit. It basically routes your traffic through multiple places (unlike a VPN that just routes your traffic through one). You’d be safer with a VPN, but at the same time, you could also access Tor without a VPN. Other operating systems like tails actually route traffic through a Tor circuit. just giving some insight

Argh ok. I do appreciate the info. I will use my McAfee VPN. Plan is to have a little wonder on the dark web and just felt slightly paranoid (watched too many videos ha). Didn’t want to expose myself to any Malware. To be fair it’s not like I will be handing over my details or opening files left right and centre ha.

I will still ring the ISP to see what settings are on my router RE restrictions etc… I did log into my router but could not find anywhere which hinted at times that are currently in operation ie I can only access certain websites after 9pm
