I am going to China next week and was looking to buy a local sim and use a VPN to access restricted apps as my phone IS NOT compatible with e-sims. Any recommendations on what VPN works best with a Chinese SIM card? Thanks

LetsVPN (快连）is probably your best bet as most of the major VPNs don’t really work in China at all (even ExpressVPN) and that its the only Chinese based VPN that is available on iOS.

Astrill from what i read is the best, Also for sim’s get yourself a travel esim from Nomad or Airalo before you enter china,

Yikes three of the replies below focus on esims. Read the post!! OP says their phone isn’t compatible with esims!

From what I’ve gleaned on here a China mobile sim with the Let’s Fly VPN is a good solution

I would get a foreign esim. Worked like a charm for me. Did not need a VPN

Get a travel esim. It’ll be more expensive but will route via Hong Kong so no need for vpns

LetsVPN worked great for us

I bought a proprietary VPN, put in my Chinese SIM card, & it only would connect to VPN whilst using WiFi. Not much help when data roaming & using for maps. Didn’t need it at all whilst using my normal UK SIM card. That was my experience anyway. Just got back yesterday.

Yeh, my only need would be a reliable connection that allows me to access Instagram, twitter and all google apps etc so if the standard option achieved that it would be plenty.

Is the standard good enough for also streaming YouTube videos?
