I have downloaded and use Tor when on the dark web but I’m curious how Tor is different from Double VPN and Onion over VPN. It seems like all 3 option hide your identity pretty well. I’m new to the dark web though and have not purchased anything yet. Thanks for your input
I’m by no means an expert, so I may be corrected, but using a VPN doesn’t necessarily hide your identity. If your provider logs your information/traffic, there is still a paper trail that leads back to you because they do know what your actual IP address is.
I’m not 100% sure on this next part, but I believe Tor routes your connection through 3 random nodes, making it much more difficult to track your activity, if not impossible.
The FAQ on Tor’s website can probably explain better than I can.
So you trust the VPN company to not keep logs!!?!?!?!
Get real!!! NordVPN was hacked, PIA was hacked!!! ect all them. Every couple months (they work with Government obviously)
NO VPN!!! THEY ARE IN THE BUSINESS OF DATA SELLING!!!
Correct.
Also, if you pay or in any way give information to the vpn they know who you are.
The vpn provider is also 1 entity, a single point of failure
Tor is a lot of volunteers.
Yeah exactly, why risk a vpn who says “no we don’t log your details” but if the government asked would be first to let them sit and watch your connections. With tor there is no worry with that, you connect to 3 random nodes and then you can use a bridge too if you don’t want your ISP to even see that there’s a tor connection. If you don’t use a bridge then your ISP would see your connecting to tor but nothing else.
I never said I trusted anyone…It was a question because I wanted to get more educated. Take it down a notch
The ISP knowing you’re connecting to tor is important because potentially a government could gather a list of all tor connections from cooperating ISPs and then correlate whatever event they’re curious in based on time and data transfer size
I agree, hence why I always use a bridge personally :). Actually have a list of 6 or so bridges I flick through when I boot up and replace when they stop working. Tor is amazing but it does have its flaws if you don’t help yourself too.
Haha! Pussy question? I’ve never heard that before. I’m curious what exactly a pussy question is…You even misquoted your question. Nice job internet tough guy. Go back to school, learn a little bit and come back with an education, maybe one day you can become a respectful member of society
Thanks for the info, how do I obtain/use a bridge?
In some countries doing mundane shit like browsing reddit or Facebook is illegal. Then there’s the people at risk by publicly criticizing said governments on the internet via social media or press. Plenty of legitimate reasons to do “illegal” things on the internet.
Also you don’t really need any reason at all to want privacy.
coming from a guy named karl hungus lmao!!!
back to school yeah ok!!! lolololoolol!!!
Google “bridges tor” click the first link and click the 2nd option “get bridges” I think. To use them you’d have to check the tor documentation exactly as I use tails with mine to install bridges.
It’s a valid question, just one that most people have already answered for themselves by the time they discover tor. People get touchy in the privacy subs with these kinds of questions but don’t take it personally and stay curious!
Privacy isn’t about hiding “illegal” activities.
Would i make you uncomfortable if I knew every detail about your life to the point that I could use your browsing history to (for example) tell you have a 7year old kid with an underlying heart condition and I can sell that information to insurance agencies so when you go to insure your child they deny you because of a pre existing condition you didn’t tell them about.
This is why privacy matters.
