Is PureVPN really worth it?

I keep seeing PureVPN and would like to know if anyone recommends it and if it is worth the money.

There are so many mixed reviews about the brand and how it all works.

Support is poor. A lot of servers seem to have gone offline, so I have to update my Linux scripts. I have a 5 year contract, but after I purchased it, they cut many of the location that I liked to use. They also dropped several VPN protocols that I preferred. They make setting up Wireguard way too hard.

Most of the time I use Protone’s free vpn, as it just works, and I hardly ever use my paid for PureVPN.

I got it last year and so far so good. Haven’t had any problems really and the app has a free tracker blocker :woman_shrugging:

Using it for quite some time, no major issues faced so far. You can give it a try. Support is helpful too.

I’ve had them for about 8 years, but my 5 year sub is nearly up and I won’t renew. I’m sure what happened to the company internally, but they went from passable service to unusable during the last few years. Here’s my biggest gripes:

  1. The Chrome Extension randomly disconnects now, ever 15-30 minutes, even when I am currently downloading files via regular d/ls (and Torrents). This is worse than not having a VPN at all, because at least I know to stay on safe sites. This is the reason I’m cancelling, but it’s not my only reason.
  2. Internet Kill Switch - Proven to leak IP details, even when connected, with no errors or drops reported. Until very recently, I HAD to use IKS if I wanted to browse the web using their extension, or it would break.
  3. Every 10 or 20 times I use ‘Open link in new window’, an unbranded, non-PureVPN pop-up window opens, prompting for Name/PW, locking the browser up until I close it, or hand-type the name and password for my PureVPN account. If you type them in, it works until the next time.
  4. The Windows VPN client as a resource hog with awful, Window 11/Android-style UI where everything is buried and I can change NOTHING in settings unless I’m disconnected, which I forget every time. Same for browsing servers. If I click on one to switch, they give an error, until I disconnect and go find it again. Super annoying.
  5. I can use a good protocol, like WireGuard, or a good connection, but never both. You have to let them choose, or put it on UDP,
  6. I tried to set up router-based PureVPN for my IoT devices that shouldn’t be trusted, but couldn’t get it to work on any of my routers (WNR3500L, RT-AC5300, RT-AX88U Pro, Nighthawk and others). Maybe it was my settings, but considering I followed all the directions each time, who knows? I recently created my own Oracle VM instance running Mint on Ampere CPUs with both WireGuard and OpenVPN working fine for the same thing, so I doubt it. I’m sure it works for some people.

And the Automod can skip asking for my email. I’ve already created tickets for 3-4 of these things before realizing I was wasting my time. The support had no clue and whatever corporate-facing documentation they have was no help. Just uninstall the client with Revo Uninstaller, check your firewall settings, reset your network device and if that didn’t fix it, give up.

Never never never. Literally anyone else but them.
Shittiest company so far.

When it’s disconnected no matter what , the device its on it starts to lag and not work properly I have to uninstall for it to work normally again
