How to get new "built in" VPN to work now that Google One VPN is kaput?

I noticed my Internet stopped working today which I then remembered today is the magical day Google One VPN is shutdown. Apparently a new update is supposed to give Pixel users access to a “built in” VPN. Anyone figure out how to do this? Or is it not in place yet.

P8P for reference. Feeling a widdle scawred without it.

Pixel 7 here and Google One VPN just stopped working. The issue is the help page says the built-in VPN will be available with the June software update. Well, Google hasn’t rolled out the June update to my carrier yet. They couldn’t wait to shut it down until the replacement was ready?

I had an update this morning, the built in VPN will connect but nothing will load while it’s active.

Mine just works. It says VPN by Google in the settings and is connected.

If you’re on a Pixel 8 series phone, it’ll continue working since it was a built-in feature specifically for this series from the beginning.

Once the Google One version shutdown, the update to the “VPN by Google” app brings the same functionality to the 7 series.

But yes, it’s buggy as hell.

My tip is this… add the VPN by Google Quick Tile to your tiles. And just tap the tile to turn it on and off. Sometimes, if you long press it, it’ll straight up turn the VPN off and then take you to a screen that says something like “VPN cannot be used on this account” or some nonsense.

but it otherwise works. Just configure it to pause on certain networks when you get a chance, if you’d like… allow it location permission access as well so it enables/disables automatically.

I was having this problem since yesterday, and this is how I fixed it

  • Go to the quick tile for the VPN in your settings and press + hold it to open up the VPN app
  • It should say “VPN by Google”, and nothing about Google One
  • Bring up the app switcher by swiping up or whatever you do with the old button navigation
  • You should see that the VPN app’s icon is like a shield with the G logo on it (f it’s the Google One app icon you probably don’t have the update yet, but everybody with a pixel 8 should have gotten the new VPN a while ago I think)
  • Tap on that icon and then tap app info
  • Go to storage & cache, then clear both.
  • Go back into the VPN app. It should now show you a screen where it gives you a short description of what a VPN is for, and asks if you want to use it on your mobile network. At the bottom, select “Use VPN”
  • This should bring you back to the screen from before. Turn on the VPN as usual. I did this and the VPN works like normal now.

Anybody who is having a problem with the pixel VPN, try this and lmk if it works.

EDIT: This is the play store link for the pixel VPN app. If you don’t have this installed then that’s another issue https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.privacy.wildlife

Same issue here, P8P

Edit: as of June 21st, VPN works again, sites and apps are able to load normally. No new updates or anything. I was already on the latest(June) Software update, security patch, and Google play version.

P8, same issue started today

Our apologies for the connectivity issues you are experiencing. We’ve fixed this issue, and anyone who experienced this issue can reconnect to VPN to recover.

Same. Been having issues all day

It is just after midnight where I am and my Google 1 VPN shows as connected (both on wifi and cellular). I’m on a P7P impatiently waiting for the June feature drop/update. Carrier is Tmobile, FWIW.

Update to the latest version to get the VPN. In classic Pixel fashion, it of course does not work.

For Fi users: disable VPN by Google entirely and activate the Google Fi VPN. Worked like a charm. No Always-On option though. Guess everyone else has to wait for the update. I’ve been refreshing & getting nothing.

Have a Pixel 7a and the VPN by Google works through Settings. I’m running Android 15 beta 3 so that might make a difference?

This is extremely frustrating the last 2 days. It’s bad enough it’s being taken away

P7P working fine. The VPN by google is in the network setting at the bottom. Also go to settings and search VPN and open the app from there, then go to the app listing in Google play store and set it up. That’s how I got it working. Also have to edit your quick tile to get the VPN by google tile.

To get to the new Google VPN:

Settings → Apps → See all (Number of) apps → Tap on search/magnify icon in upper right hand next to the 3 dots/settings icon → Search for VPN → Select, ‘VPN by Google’ → Select open app icon in upper right hand corner, next to 3 dots/settings icon → Toggle, ‘Use VPN’.

This should also add a new VPN shortcut to the shortcut icon menu.

Hope this helps.

I’m having the same issue. I’m on P8P, and received the June update 2 days ago.

I’ve downloaded the DuckDuckGo browser for it’s “App Tracking Protection”. Using this activates a VPN connection, but I’ve got no idea how good it is other than enabling the app tracking protection.

Same issue here. I have a Pixel 8 Pro and VPN no longer working. And no sign of the June Software update yet. (T-MOBILE)
