Hi, I want to take my work laptop out of country and still have my IP address show up as my home city however I can’t install VPN software on my work computer. Can I somehow link to my friends iMac if she is on a VPN link to my home city? Is there another way? (I need a reliable and fast connection so I’m hesitant to use my iPhone as a VPN hotspot). Please help!
VPN provider that offers static IP from a specific area. Then setup a router to always go through the VPN. It doesn’t have to be down to the city level. I’d wager an IP address that shows up as your home county is enough. Note that this is not recommended if it is a job you care about.
There’s no way directly on your computer, because vpn connections setup virtual network adapters (not sure how else to describe).
An alternative would be a ssh tunnel using portable putty or kitty (which is a fork of putty with more options). However a ssh tunnel can only be used on applications which support proxies - e.g browsers. It’s not systemwide!
Another option might be a vpn router. But that’s an extra device.
Ps: it’s not possible to share a mobile vpn (you named your iPhone) via the hotspot functionality.
In the past there was a way on rooted android, but afaik that’s not working anymore either.
Gl-inet sells a variety of “travel routers” that are portable and support a variety of VPN providers.
You set up the VPN on the router, connect your computer to its Wi-Fi, and then use your browser to connect the router to whatever Wi-Fi network is available where you are.
As far as your machine is concerned it just thinks it’s connecting to a regular old access point, no software required.
Install the browser plugin
Ok thanks for the info! I don’t mind buying an extra device (vpn router). Can you recommend one?
I cant install anything on work laptop.
You can use an old router and flash OpenWRT firmware if the hardware is supported and setup VPN clients. This is a bit more technical
But if you want plug and play GL-MT3000 / Beryl AX - GL.iNet is an excellent travel router. Setting up VPN connection is easy and there are tons of tutorials on YT to help you with that
You can use a raspberry pi for example.
Just search for raspberry pi vpn router or vpn gateway. You should find something.
It’s fairly easy. Just creating the routes might get a bit confusing.
Seconding this option. Easiest way for OP to do this reliably is to configure that router to only use the VPN & only connect to that router.
