OK, so, a couple of weeks ago I made a post in this subreddit in which I asked you guys for any free VPN suggestions. I got 2 comments in that post, one telling me not use free VPNs as they can be dangerous and one simply just stating that “hide.me works pretty well”. Of course, being the cheap-ass that I am, I decided to go for the hide.me option. But now, I wonder if I made the right decision. Is hide.me trustworthy? Or is it some sort of fraud?
u/SoulLessRedditor_ , hide.me has a free option, it is NOT a free VPN.
u/culmor30 They’re not completely free, It gives you a hard data limit per month (2gb).
It’s designed for testing their service, or for limited use when you’re on public wifi.
The paid option from them is quite expensive, but it’s super good.
It’s worth reading this:
Even more helpful;
The most useful point is this:
.
Zero Log Policy
We have designed a strong privacy oriented policy with no activity logs saved on any of our servers. We are the only VPN provider who has been audited by independent security analysts, like Leon Juranic, who have certified us to be completely log free.
.
Which is true; he mentions
When someone so highly respected in the security industry is allowed full access to poke around and make sure their claims are true; well that’s reassuring.
Every other VPN provider we have to trust to do as they promise.
To my knowledge, hide.me are the only guys to get a highly respected professional to PROVE their claims.
So while u/culmor30 us correct in what he says is POSSIBLE, with this VPN, it’s much more unlikely than any other.
No one else has been independently audited.
IF ANOTHER ONE HAS please let me know, because I’d love to have a cheaper alternative; I just don’t trust the whole “We promise!” mentality of basically every other VPN; I’m not affiliated with them at all; so if there ARE others who have opened their doors to an audit to prove their claims, please tell me.
why would you trust a vpn service you don’t subsidize? That whole question is madness.
Avoid it, free VPNs are a waste of time. Paid options can be like $3 per month so go for that
If want to know if hide.me VPN works for you or not or any free ones u/thatoneprivacyguy
has an excellent site https://thatoneprivacysite.net/ that breaks down pretty much all of the VPNS out there including the free ones.
Opera has a built in vpn for free. Idk why people would tell you not to use a free one. Do whatever you want. Don’t listen to the money wasting haters.
Hide.me VPN broke my computer. After uninstalling it because I didn’t use the program anymore, my internet connection started to drop constantly. Those scammers put bad software that harms your PC. Don’t install it.
Bro, this one’s the most helpful comment yet, thanks man. I’d give you gold or something if it wasn’t for my poor ass.
Based on this is looks like Nordvpn.com is the best?
Opera VPN is not a safe or secure service to use. It doesn’t use a tunneling protocol, its logging policy is overly invasive, and it isn’t strictly a real VPN. We don’t recommend you use Opera VPN to protect yourself online.
No worries. It’s been my ‘top of the list’ for a while now; I stumbled across your post when I was googling for any new ‘leaks’ or ‘worries’ people have with them; found one ‘shady’ action their parent company MIGHT (strong MIGHT) be doing in regards to routing peoples bandwidth through other customers connections; which is ‘naughty’ but still not a privacy risk; which is 99% of my concern.
So do you think safari is the safest browser now?
Edit:love getting downvoted for asking important questions. I’m a professional web developer. I know which browsers to use.
I didn’t know about Opera being bought by a Chinese company. Which isn’t in itself a bad thing. Simply something I did not know.
So all vpns are bad according to you?
Edit:
Downvoted for asking questions that get helpful responses? Cool reddit. Way to be a bunch of dicks. Can’t wait for this site to go 100% mainstream.
I found fucking Chrome more trust worthy than Opera at this point lol
Tunnel bear is still good tho, right?
So could the spying VPN’s key log and take information as if you’re on a public WiFi (card purchases, passwords)
No, those transactions are still done over HTTPS; which is encrypted itself.
