Brazilians Will Be Fined $9000 a Day If They Use VPN to Access X

Is Twitter banned there, why?

Lets not forget they’re freezing Starlinks assets in Brazil despite it being a different company.

No corruption there, not at all.

Everyone keep an eye on glen greenwald

I would be more worried about them apparently sending Agent 47 after me…

Can they even track what the people do when they use a VPN? Also, are Brazil turning into North Korea?

Imagine using a vpn everyday, you click some link on reddit, it redirects you to X to some random post and you lose 9k

Everybody says Twitter is crap but as somebody who’s been using it since 2006 I can honestly say you have to go look for crap if you want to see crap.

I see Motorsports, Pro Wrestling, stuff for iRacing, Cities Skylines & Truck Sim, and some local news and weather stuff. Same stuff I’ve been seeing in there since the 00s. It’s almost like it’s just like every other algorithm based platform out there where if you interact with shit you get served more shit but if you don’t then you don’t.

Fine for drunk driving in Brazil: $500

Fine for using Twitter with a VPN in Brazil: $9000

That’s 35X the minimum wage in Brazil.

I don’t like what Elon has done to Twitter, but this move from Brazil does seem a bit shady.

Just socialists trying to ban their opposition nothing to see here folks

What a dictator. Freedom of speech is restricted in yet another country.

Look, i don’t like Elon, but this is not a good thing at all, it reeks of corruption. (and 9000 dollars a day is fucking crazy and anti democratic.)

There’s more to this than just the lack of representatives (though, sure, that’s part of why it’s blocked). The bigger issue is that they’re not taking down content that’s considered a crime under Brazilian law. I get that most of you are used to the whole First Amendment thing, but we don’t have that in Brazil. You can say whatever you want, as long as it’s not a crime. You can walk around dressed like a Nazi because the First Amendment allows it, but I can’t own items with a Nazi swastika because it could be considered incitement or an apology for a crime.

Twitter has removed a lot of content at the request of other countries, but apparently, Elon only sees it as censorship if the request comes from Brazil.

There’s a small detail here about national sovereignty—Elon, X, or Twitter aren’t above Brazilian law, even if it’s considered censorship.

Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and even Telegram have been following the laws, and there’s no reason to block access to them.

Twitter has been allowing a lot of disgusting stuff. You have no idea how toxic the platform has become since the ownership change. Transphobic profiles, pedophilia, racism, and general apologism are rampant, and the platform doesn’t block them even after reports.

Now, imagine simpler things like a fake news post here, a little hate crime there…

If you reduce the discussion to just censorship, you need to understand there’s a lot more going on.

Hm, well Brazillian average monthly is like 600 -1800 USD+ so… What’s this about?

Now I get wanting to ban twitter to harm the company but fining the people for using it is just stupid

they walked it back btw. still utterly ridiculous that it was even considered. this country is a fucking joke.

source: I live there. unfortunately.

They also tryied to BAN VPNs all together.

Can anyone explain in short why this is happening? Why is brazil suddenly against Twitter? Did something happen?
