I ask here because on r/vpn cant name an specific provider and I didnt found info on Megathread.
Just found this, https://www.urban-vpn.com/ .
VPN services also for gamming , streaming and several others tools.
All “free”.
we all known what free usually means but still will like to read your thougts and/ or experiences.
So the VPNs are all set up on the PCs of the people using the VPN, and you’re VPNing into someone else’s internet connection rather than a dedicated server in a datacentre.
I don’t think Urban VPN claim to not log stuff, either, so I’d think twice about doing anything dodgy on it. I wouldn’t use it, because other people could be doing dodgy stuff via my connection. No thanks.
The closest thing to a trustworthy free vpn are the ones that are backed up by non-profit organizations, like riseup vpn or calyx vpn, but even then I’m skeptical. The sad truth is that if you want to be safe, you gotta pay
I always recommend paying for a VPN. If you’re going to pay for one thing, this should be it. Does Urban block p2p connections? I didn’t find a clear answer in my few minutes of investigating. If youre not using it for p2p, then what do you really need it for?
Stumbled across this review, maybe it’s par for the course for free VPN’s?:
yes, I known, btw I suscribed for Windscribe to test it.
( free version, without mail, so just 2 Gb data)
Impressive quality, speed, all perfect.
Im not from America but I guess its a very nice option
for a paid service
That’s the key: as a free user, you are essentially “volunteering” your device to be a proxy server for the paid users. If you look closely at their ToS, it says “If you use our Free Services in the Android Mobile App or Desktop App we will collect and share your IP in order to provide our residential proxy services to third parties (“p2p network services“). You further acknowledge and approve that by using our Free Services we will use certain computing resourcing from your device for providing the Residential proxy services which will slow your device’s performance and reduce your device security”.
So not only do they not protect your privacy, they are giving your IP address to other users to potentially do illegal activity and collecting more data on you than Google and your ISP combined.
I wouldn’t do it personally, but to each their own. At best, I think you’ll get slow speeds, disconnects, and possibly have p2p connections blocked. At worst, I guess it could not properly hide your IP, which could be a big problem depending on what country you’re in.
You better be prepared for option 2 for sure, If you’re in the US, and it’s a DMCA forwarded through your ISP, maybe ok (if you only get 1). If you’re in Germany, where a single offense results in a HUGE fine, I would NOT risk doing ANYTHING on ANY free VPN.
