Recently, we reminded (or informed) y’all that it’s possible to get ad-free YouTube by routing your connection through a non-monetized country, or by setting a non-monetized country as your YouTube location.

It appears that YouTube is trying to close this loophole. There are reports of VPN IP addresses from non-monetized countries getting blocked by YouTube.
If you have experienced this, report below.
what are the countries in question ??
I don’t seem to find any reports about VPN users being denied access by YouTube. Neither do I get blocked (I’m using a Bhutan server).
Never had a problem using a VPN to bypass ads on Youtube. There are many ways you can mask your VPN connection, so they don’t know if you are using a VPN.
I am in the United States, and when I try to access YouTube videos using NordVPN (using servers within US), it asks me constantly to sign in, claiming that I’m a bot. It’s pathetic that YouTube (owned by Google now) is forcing us to give up on our privacy. I don’t think this is just about ad monetization.
I had to cycle through multiple servers and find one that wasn’t flagged by Google yet to watch YouTube without signing in and using a VPN. I use a mac and ubuntu linux. Issues occured on both computers. If anyone knows of a better way to do this using NordVPN, let me know.
FYI, you can always use uBlock origin (on firefox) and it still works just fine to block the ads, VPN or not. This won’t work if you’re trying to access youtube on your iPhone using firefox, however.
law breaking assholes are what youtube is.
im in australia and i was using an american VPN to watch a show i can’t watch in australia and i was blocked from COMMUNIST youtube.
edit: blocked because it detected i was using a vpn
When I have a VPN on, videos will play until the 1 minute mark and then stop playing. Reloading page does the same. Stops at 60 seconds and just hangs on a spinning circle. I turn off Nord VPN, and it will play the full video without issue.
So I just got blocked from Youtube, I have a Yt Premium account, have for a long time (it was still called yt red then). I use VPN and got:
“VPN/PROXY DETECTED To continue, turn off your VPN/Proxy. This will allow YouTube to locate the best content.”
i can’t turn off my VPN, but I can certainly cancel a subscription.
I mostly use tor and youtube only previews 59s of the video and would not let you watch the rest.
It often pops a blocking window saying VPN/Proxy detected. Video Unavailable!
I actually didn’t experience this with a proper VPN, but tors is getting banned easily.
Just had this problem and I don’t think it has anything to do with monetization/ads. Just tried connecting from France to Brazil to watch a soccer match on YouTube (legally streamed), and it blocked me saying VPN/proxy detected. It’s absolutely absurd that youtube is allowed to this.
I’m experiencing this bullshit. It wouldn’t let watch me some olympic video if I didn’t turn off the VPN.
Unfortunately I now got the “sign in to confirm you’re not a bot” error when connecting from a Bhutan VPN server
Click the link in the OP and read.
In New Zealand i get blocked looking at EPL highlights in VPN Australia
Hopefully it was an isolated case or two. But we still need to be on the lookout.
If you are on ubuntu, I am assuming you are using it through the command line. I’m not aware of a GUI version for any distro other than Arch (custom AUR package).
If so, try these commands:
nordvpn disconnect
nordvpn set technology openvpn
nordvpn set obfuscate on
nordvpn connect
Boom! Blocker should go away. It’s possible the UBlock team could fix this soon anyway, seems like it would be an annoyance for many.
Do note that openvpn is slower than nordlynx, but with good internet it should still be plenty fast, and if privacy matters to you it’s a trade worth taking. Edit: forgot to mention that obfuscation is not available for nordlynx, that’s why you swap.
We need to know your country and the country you’re connecting to via VPN to even begin to diagnose the issue.
