Turn off VPN notifications unless there's a problem?

P7 Pro in the UK: When we got VPN with Google One I began using it, but there is an annoying persistent notification present at all times, just saying “VPN is connected”. It can be swiped away but returns quite quickly. I have silenced it, but it still appears on the lock screen.

I can block all notifications from Google One related to the VPN, but I would prefer not to have to as I’d like to be informed if there is an issue e.g. it stops working.

Perhaps the notification is necessary to keep the app active, but surely this can’t be the extent Google has integrated their own VPN into their own OS on their own flagship device?

On Pixel 4 and Pixel 6, I cannot find it by navigating, but you can open Settings, search for notifications, select Notifications under Privacy and Permission manager, and this will show App notifications. Find Google One, do not turn off all notifications, but turn off VPN. This should get rid of the VPN notification but keep the key icon around so you still know the VPN is connected at a glance.
