They are having a nice discount for two-year deal, so I wanted to know if that are any good.
Some pros:
Located in Switzerland. They have strong privacy laws I think.
No log keeping since 2018.
I need it for torrenting once in a while (however nobody gives a damn here about that). I just want to protect my privacy a bit from my ISP and the government. So far I’m using free version of ProtonVPN for at least some protection, but I’m looking to upgrade.
VyprVPN, officially Golden Frog GmbH, used to frown upon the usage of P2P services on their network. They also kept usage logs. That all changed in November 2018.
VyprVPN worked with respected cybersecurity firm Leviathan Security Group to perform a complete audit of their systems after they changed to a “no-logs” service. Leviathan Security Group’s release paper can be publicly found here. You can read Golden Frog’s official blog post regarding the audit as well.
The security audit revealed VyprVPN does not log the following: source and designated IP addresses, connection start/stop times, and user traffic. They also do not prohibit P2P services or throttle/rate-limit user connections since they cannot identify connection protocols anymore. You may verify this information on their support page here.
VyprVPN is unique in that their parent company, Golden Frog, owns every server in their vast network. Most VPN providers lease dedicated (and sometimes shared) servers which increases risk to customer privacy. A self-owned network makes it easier for Golden Frog to fine-tune their service, maintain network security, and prevent third-party logging at the datacenter level. The Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) has also highlighted this in their ”Unedited Answers: Signals of Trustworthy VPNs” article which includes VyprVPN.
Golden Frog is a cash-rich sister company to well-known technology corporation Data Foundry (formerly Texas.net)—one of the first 50 ISPs in the United States. Data Foundry’s self-owned carrier-neutral facilities provide a blended-network via private fiber lines. Both Golden Frog and Data Foundry share the same founders—Ron & Carolyn Yokubaitis who are well-known privacy advocates. You can read about them on Data Foundry’s website here as well as on Golden Frog’s website here.
As far as speeds and application performance goes, I cannot comment. I have never used their service nor do I have experience with their staff or customer service. However, Golden Frog has always been respected as a privacy-focused company—they were founded in response to the infamous Room 641a project by the NSA. Their main downfall used to be customer-logging and opposition to P2P protocols—both of which are non-issues now.
All of the information I have provided above is public and easily verifiable online. Golden Frog made drastic changes to their modus operandi last year and should be commended for them.
Have used them before in the past and have found them good now they don’t log and yes i did torrent/stream and never had an issue dmca or otherwise. Speeds were also good due to them owning their network, don’t know if it’s true but they market it like that. Can’t comment on support as never used them. Things I didn’t like is they made their app worse when they upgraded it and they don’t add servers much but that can be said about other vpns.
Those Reddit posts are not relevant today—the latest is dated 2+ years ago.
VyprVPN does not store connection logs anymore—verified via a public third-party security audit late last year. Maybe you’ll find my post in this thread useful.
That is incorrect, they are definitely storing connection logs. They use those logs to forward DMCA notices to their own VPN customers.
Proof. All those links are before they got audited to prove no logging. I never got DMCA when I used them for torrenting the couple days I had them and decided to return because of speeds.
