I’ve just purchased NordVPN 2-years plan. Now after all the reviews about Nord, I think if my choice was right.
I think I can still make a refund.
The speed is good (600 kib/s to 2 mb/sec), but drops sometimes. My speed on speedtest.net is 9 mbps for download without VPN. Are my results good for p2p? What do you guys think?
I’ve read that no port forwarding can affect the torrent downloading speed, is it true?
What do you think is the most secure and fastest VPN for torrents?
Please, suggest. Thank you.
Please, don’t hate - this is my first paid VPN.
I have tried all three VPN’s i.e. ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and VyperVPN. These 3 are the most popular tools which provide secure and fastest access. But if you didn’t satisfy with Nord VPN then, you can also try other services.
I would also recommend you to compare all these best VPNs for torrenting & P2P on the internet. Therefore, it will help you to choose the right decision for VPN to use.
Even though this VPN often isn’t considered as one of the top-VPNs for Torrents, I’m very happy with ProtonVPN.
I tested out the following paid services:
- NordVPN (but quite a while ago, so I can’t really tell)
- Mullvad
- ProtonVPN
- TorGuard
- ExpressVPN
I prefer and in the end chose Proton, because it has by far the nicest user interface and I trust the company itself the most, which has been founded by CERN scientists. Having visited CERN in Switzerland 3 times, I have large respect for the efforts those scientists put into finding out more about the origin of our universe, and that’s a large plus for Proton, not having to trust a company you don’t know anything about sitting somewhere.
Speeds have been extreeeeemely similar for me, not noticing any difference on average. Of course, sometimes peak speeds are better here or better there, but in general, it’s the same.
I tested that with 3 different connections to the internet (DSL, Starlink, 4G) and I really can’t tell why speeds vary so much according to some users.
Another plus for Proton is that you can select the exact server you want to be on and see the current load of this particular server. I know Mullvad does the server-selecting thing as well, but you can’t see current load there. But ExpressVPN for example just let’s you select the country and sometimes the city, if there are multiple data centers in this country. This feature gives you the option to choose “your IP-adress” and for example being able to avoid certain blocked servers somewhere, by creating your own profiles.
Torrenting also works just fine over Proton, never had any issues.
Mullvad. Port forwarding affects upload speeds, not download. If you have symmetrical type service like I do, you get the same speeds up or down.
Plenty out there. Below are the one i tend to move between etc
- Celo VPN
- Mullvad
- AirVPN
- ProtonVPN
- AzirVPN
Do you get connected to more peers in VPN compared to normal connection? I see this in my case, don’t know why.
Thank you for your insight. As I understand, all big VPN names don’t provide Port Forwarding. Am I right?
I also like your ideological approach and the reasons why you’ve chosen ProtonVPN!
Thank you for your reply. I also wonder how crucial is portforwarding for using torrents with vpn.
Good point. I thought that port forwarding also affected downloading as you could connect to more seeds…
I’ve already started using it. Download speed is faster than in utorrent. +25% maybe
Thank you, good to hear if I could give you a useful answer!
Well, port forwarding definitely is some kind of security risk, which is the reason why most VPN providers don’t have that option.
Port forwarding in general (also on your home router for example) should only be used if you are absolutely sure what you are doing, since it gives some kind of “open door”.
But, port forwarding or not, I think that shouldn’t be much of an issue.
You can still download and seed your torrents as usual, and keep in mind, those other peers you are getting your files from are probably using VPNs as well (unless they are crazy or have no idea), and it works quite fast, so I wouldn’t mind that too much.
