Google shut down ONE VPN, which makes no sense to me. Google still is obligated to keep VPN alive for anyone with a Pixel phone + anyone on Google Fi. So it makes no sense that they kill it for everyone on Google One.
Since they are still keeping the VPN around for the other users, and the reason for closing it was because not enough Google One users used VPN, it would reason that it is not much more expensive to keep it around for Google One users.
I get it if they were shutting down for good, because nobody is using it, but they are still keeping it around for Pixel and Fi users. So they are still using resources to keep it alive. make it make sense.
I feel like they lied when they said no one used it. They’re being stingy af.
Shutting down Google One VPN is baffling. It started as a perk for the 2TB plan (and higher), then expanded to all plans. Now, stopping it altogether just doesn’t add up. They don’t seem to have any kind of plan.
Not to mention that Google One VPN was working for me on my other devices, but now Google Pixel VPN doesn’t work on my Pixel 8 Pro. It seems to be tied to the country version from the Policies/TOS page (that cannot be changed easily), not to the country of the Google account.
F Google! I used it all the time. After I saw they were killing it. I went out and got Nord VPN. So far, so good!
F U Google!
They just want to enhance the competitiveness of their pixel devices, I guess
I purchased an S24 after years of iPhone and when I came back Google killed podcasts and the VPN… same old google.
I’m confused, is it available free now on all Pixels? Where do I find it?
I used that VPN all the time on my phone now it’s gone wtf…that was not cool at all Google did us dirty on this one.
they want to save 1 cents when they waste $100000 on other things.
for me, without vpn, I would rather switch to iCloud and hard drive.
I am confused. I still have the VPN. I use it on several devices. Is there something that I am missing?
Aka it was costing more than it was making lol
Fr F google I loved that VPN: it was free with my Google One plan, worked great, was fast, worked on my iPhone and PC. Like why the hell would they remove it? It was one of the must useful perk of subscribing to Google One along with storage.
I liked to use Google VPN.
Switched to Nord VPN too
Sucks, but, whatever…
Nord VPN is so expressive, is there any cheaper method (beside spliiit)?
I think it’s Pixel 7 and newer. I’m on 7 Pro.
I don’t even think that it is, Google is famous to kill project making more than it costs but not reaching the growth and numbers they expect (or more accurately speaking “numbers they wished”)
Google wants “killer products” that goes viral and stay widely used bringing a huge profit margin.
They probably saw the VPN more as a feature of Google One, a feature costing money or a feature that could be cut to bring more money and increase their margin.
Also OP talks about the fact that the service will still be there with the servers, but there is one missing point: server provisioning, and that is where the immediate benefit of cutting it will be.
My point is, they’re still paying to keep it alive for Pixel and Fi users. So why not keep it available for Google One users as well?
Damn that sucks so much. A feature I paid for is gone & is available for free, but not on my device anymore.
