PSA: Do not download those VPN apps that are on sale. They all use the same UI, they're all made by developers with generic VPN names, and they all have the same issues

The current VPN apps that are free instead of $10-$20 look very shady. I highly recommend NOT downloading them. For some reason I can’t post images but they are on the current app sale.

Edit: It seems there is a common misconception going on about what the best VPN to use is; There is none. The problem with shadowing your internet usage is, regardless of where your routing your data, it’s still going through someone’s server/s.

If that company is acquired, or breached, your data is good as gone (Implying that said application/company logs your internet usage, but even if that’s not the case, that doesn’t stop someone from the outside of logging it themselves.), because regardless of who you entrust your data with, someone will have it. A VPN will not stop a government agency from tracing your data back to your IP.

Edit 2: Can’t believe I forgot to mention this, but feel free to report them as malicious/copycats. Here is a screenshot of the apps

Edit 4: Thank you to qbix and sir_froggy for recommending r/VPN and That One Privacy Site!

The general rule of thumb for VPNs is if you’re not paying for them, there’s something wrong. It’s like your internet provider, you’re not going to get an internet connection for free.

Proton free should be okay no?

It seems easier to host your own VPN. I’m surprised nobody has packaged this up in some little app that has you install something on your computer

Sorry, but that anti-VPN rant is both wrong and short sighted. Your Internet usage always goes through someone else’s server!

If security and privacy are your only goals, the question should be:

Do I trust the VPN provider more than my current Internet provider and/or the government under whose jurisdiction it operates?

And that’s a question that should ask yourselfbe asked every time you connect: at home, while roaming, on your hotel WiFi, in the airport, on a plane etc.

Additionally, VPNs can provide tons of additional services: regional unblocking, ad- and malware blocking, performance improvements etc.

Yes, these VPNs are incredibly shady. Not all them are and I would trust many of them more than my hotel WiFi or in-flight WiFi. Heck, US In-flight flight WiFi is so notoriously nosey I might even trust these shitty apps more than Gogo …

If you want a free VPN with the less data mining you can get:

  1. ProtonVPN free tier
  2. Psiphon downloading the APK from their website

Uh, oh. What about “VPNHub” from the PornHub team. I like it, but i dont know if it’s shaddy or not.

I highly recommend NordVPN, absolute best in my opinion, I’ve tried PiA but I just like the UI and ease of use of Nord better.

It’s worth the money; and remember if you’re not paying for it, you’re the product.

What about the OpenVPN app? This is the one I am talking about: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.openvpn.openvpn

Why can’t the entire internet just be a VPN? Thay’d be nice.

A better PSA would be not to download any of that fake “on sale” shit lol

I recently signed up with NordVPN. They had a deal for 3 years of service they were charging $90 cdn. So far I’ve been really happy with the service.

I highly recommend Mullvad VPN. Good Speed, resonable prices and above all, no record of you as your account is simply nothing more than a random generated number.

I was watching youtube on my phone last night, scrolling down past recommended videos and as I was scrolling there was a VPN ad between every other 2 youtube videos.

I usually use Orbot for my bamboozling needs

It gets the job done, I know that it can’t really leak my info, and even if it does it will probably leak some pedophile’s info as well so no one will give a single shit about mine. Key is to start an app with Orbot and then disable it once the network check is done.

If someone is willing to shed some dough, Perfect Privacy is a good choice. Unlimited users, no logs and the least latency I’ve experienced while gaming.

Nordvpn or expressvpn… google ipleaks always make sure your not leaking your IP aand make sure for a fact that your VPN isn’t being logged

What are your opinions of Orbot and Torfox?

i trust Windscribe, been a lifetime customer for over a year now

Why is there no open source free VPN service?
