Has anyone living outside of the US had any success using NordVPN with either the YouTubeTV app directly or through the NBC app (logged into YouTube TV credentials)? If so, what did you do?
I’m living abroad, but using my family’s YouTube TV credentials (as I’m a user on the family plan), but I can never get either the YouTubeTV app or the NBC app to work, as it always detects I’m outside of the US. I have followed NordVPN’s instructions with the SmartDNS instructions, but no luck. Other apps work, including Peacock.
You’re better off using a smaller, lesser known VPN. All of the live streaming services I have used, including YTTV, block VPNs. They know the IP addresses of all of the large VPN companies and block them. The VPN companies that are smaller are less likely to have their IPs identified as being owned by a VPN company and thus, less likely to be blocked.
Posting known working VPNs on Reddit is a sure way to ensure that they won’t be working much longer.
I can confirm that I’ve had zero luck using the NordVPN tvOS app (on Apple TV) to fool YTTV. I’m based in the US but wanted to watch another city’s local programming. I did get it to work using the Web version on my MacBook and also on my iPhone. What’s interesting is that although I could watch another regions local programming, the local NBC Sports channels were blocked for some reason. I can mirror the app to my TV but it’s kind of cumbersome doing that but better than nothing.
I am having success using Nord VPN on my Apple TV. The key was going into settings and turning OFF Location Services. I now watch my home team football and baseball games that are normally blacked out for me.
Yes but there’a a trick. You have to create an Apple ID for said country. The way to do this is either have a card on file in that country… or use a vpn for whatever country you want and create an iTunes account. I have UK apps on my Apple TV but can only utilize them properly when NordVPN is on and I switch over to the UK account.
I was able to get NBC sports to work with my YTTV credentials on my MacBook, but when I try to mirror, the video remains a black screen. I tried to connect via an HDMI cable, still black screen. And I tried AirPlay, and it was audio only.
Very interesting. I’ve never used Tailscale before… how do you make that work? I’ve used AnyDesk to log into my Mac mini in the States which makes YouTube TV work, but that’s the only way I’ve gotten it to work internationally.
Tailscale supports the use of Exit nodes . I have one setup at a relatives house outside of my viewing area. I appear as at their IP address when I want to be.
Install tailscale on the appletv, select what exit node I want, and then it works.
It helps if you keep Allow Apps to use your location setting off.
