Q 1: I’ve got an old TZ215 at work which came with 2 “Global VPN Client” licenses and we purchased 10 more licenses (back in 2016). Now we need to add 10 more licenses to the firewall but when I tried to register it on mysonicwall, it said the product is past End of Support and can no longer be registered. Is it possible to get additional Global VPN Client licenses for an EoS device (without registering) or do I have to upgrade the hardware?
Q 2: While browsing specs for other brands (Fortigate, Sophos and Huawei), I saw that the majority allow hundreds or even thousands of VPN connections before you need to add licenses. Is this also possible with newer SonicWall firewalls or do their base devices still come with just 2 licenses?
The TZ and NSA ranges still just come with a couple of bundled VPN licences these days.
I don’t think you’ll manage to activate the new ones on a device which is that old, they dropped out of support 3 years ago.
Getting new hardware and licences is pretty much the only way forward. If you stick with Sonicwall, ensure the reseller knows it’s an upgrade to get better pricing, or get a competitive trade in for something like a Fortigate.
Yeah, you’ll have to upgrade. The entry level firewall (maybe even bottom two) have 1 of each VPN license (Global (l2tp) and SSL).
You’ll also get massive improvements in every area if you upgrade - the old 215s don’t do some stuff the newer models do, and the things they can do, are done slower and less reliably!
SonicWall currently have a promo on where you can trade in gen 6 (and older) devices and get a discount on the new unit, so it’s definitely worth looking at/doing!
If you use the “secure upgrade” program for SonicWall it will move over all the additional licenses you paid for as well. Save you like $200. For Q2 those are not client to site they are site to site (meaning between network appliances). Fortigate and Sohphos both charge for client connections as well

Most all higher end NSA series SonicWALL firewalls come with 2000 GV licenses. The low end NSA units come with 50 GV licenses. TZ units are much more limited, some with just two. At least you can transfer purchased licenses, even from expired units (if you purchased them while they were active lol). Probably time to upgrade.

You’re right, I have a a few later models (NSA series) at some branches, much better than TZ 215… I wasn’t involved in the 215’s purchase, they got it without checking the life cycle.
