Is Proton VPN the only VPN in the current VPN market that is truly free? I mean all clients are available and there are no ads.

It really depends on how you define free. For instance, there are VPNs that are on paper “free”, and some even have no ads, but are actually selling your information or logging. Then, there are others that are “free” but then have a bandwidth limit and cap, after which the VPN stops working. There were also some “free” VPNs that were actually selling your network connection as a proxy network (Hola VPN being the most famous example of this).

Proton VPN is likely the only VPN that is free in all respects.

-No speed limits and no bandwidth cap

-Free forever (not a free trial)

-Free software (open source)

-No ads, and no logs (fully audited)

-Does not sell your data, and does not monetize free users at all

What sets Proton VPN free apart is also the performance, it’s honestly faster than most paid VPNs, and it also has advanced anti-censorship technologies built in that enable it to freely work in places like China, Russia, Iran, etc (the world’s most difficult networks). It’s also available on all operating systems, browsers, and devices, and free users can also get customer support.

If this sounds like impossibly bad business, well, that’s true also. Supplying free VPN in many of the countries where we’re the only VPN that has invested in the technology to continue operating is definitely a money losing exercise. But this leads us to perhaps Proton’s biggest differentiator - Proton VPN is primarily owned by the non-profit Proton Foundation.

Proton is about putting people ahead of profits, and by using Proton VPN (and perhaps paying for it), you’re supporting our core mission to enable online freedom around the world. That in turn, let’s us provide a truly free VPN.

I have Proton Unlimited, but I am using AdGuardVPN (paid), AdGuardVPN with the default settings is twice as fast as ProtonVPN with the default settings.

VPNgate runs a valuable community service, although depending on why you need a VPN, you might want to take a close look at their logging policy.

Windscribe and TunnelBear free versions with the usage cap - not a bad option if you only need to use a VPN occasionally. For extended use, that bandwidth cap disappears very quickly. Personally, I had some privacy concerns around how they were logging usage.
