Is a VPN really all I need to be safe while torrenting?

Removed pending your removing recommending a specific VPN. That’s not allowed here. Reply back when you’ve had a chance to edit out the vendor and I’ll re-approve it. Thanks!

what if you have Real Debrid, using torrents to stream but not downloading while in Kodi?

So if I just a “good” VPN, there’s no way to trace a torrent download to a specific computer right?

They don’t catch people (generally) by sniffing the traffic. The typical way people get caught is an investigator will join the swarm of a public torrent and get every IP connected to the torrent. That’s why public torrent sites are orders of magnitude more risky than private ones.

I would disagree, as I had a run in with my isp.

You are totally mistaken. ISPs are not the problem here, but agencies acting on behalf of copyright holders.

They will get on trackers and collect all IPs connected to each other with bots that stay online all the time.

Then they contact your ISP in order to shut you down.

You do need a VPN.

Is it like Tor?

Sort of. It’s a different approach - each I2P user is can also be a “router” which is similar to Tor internal relays. They are a great team that does great work: read the documentation here. Torrenting I2P ↔ I2P would be speed efficient as I recall I2P at one point having only one ‘exit node’ to the clearweb internet.

It’s an overlay network, like Tor and Freenet.

Contrary to Tor, you can do everything (including file sharing) on i2p, except accessing the clearnet (although technically you could, but that requires setting up exit nodes, which are not common in i2p).

Not just the OS but any program the user is running as well (especially if they’re not open-source and vetted, and properly configured).

Not about PIA…all the links I read were that they held their own in court, which is why I still pay for it. If they truly have logging disabled nothing short of a court order would force them to turn it on (and they still wouldnt have any logs from the past obviously) and at that point I’m guessing the public would find out and the company would be crushed. I mean whats a VPN service without the Private part of it.

IMO because they are a US based company that *could* happen someday, but would the FBI\etc really spend all that effort to get folks that torrent? Tinfoil hat thoughts would be they’d go after some terrorism angle “terrorists are using PIA for blah blah” but Christ there are so many free vpn options that couldn’t link payment back to someone…etc etc.

The tech in me thinks IF the govt wanted to see traffic they could find a way to get into PIA and look at the raw traffic and go from there. I’m sure they’ve infiltrated more secure companies\govts…but again, tinfoil hat and why would they.

To the judge, how was I supposed to know that I could password protect my wireless router from ‘intruders’ ?

Sadly, this doesn’t work in all countries. In Germany for instance, the judge would say something like “idc lol” because people are responsible for their internet connection.

It’s been softened over the past year, but not by much.

Removed all comments in this chain recommending a specific VPN. That’s not allowed here.

Haven’t used those. But having VPN is like this: All packets from all programs go from your PC to the proxy server encrypted (PIA server) and from there to the end server. So for your IP it looks like there is tons of traffic from your PC to the Server (PIA in my case).

There is always a way, it’s just more difficult.

If VPN disconnects - there is.

They don’t catch people (generally) by sniffing the traffic

Not sure what you mean by sniffing.

They just join the torrent (start downloading) and log every IP they see.

if you use a good client and blocklists, the torrent trolls don’t see you because your client doesn’t let you share info with known torrent trolls.
