IP Address

Hi!

Newbie here with regards to VPNs. I know what they are, I know what they’re supposed to do. I’ve researched a few good ones that I’m going to give a try (but always looking for experiences and more recommendations)! Kill switch is a must! I don’t want to take a chance.

I do not know how to change my modem and all that stuff (I’m trying to learn but trying to go through different steps first).

I have an IP Address location question.

What is the BEST website to check that my IP is correct/showing where I want it to be.

If for some reason a VPN doesn’t work, I can use my phone as a hotspot. It shows a different state than where (which is what I want; it’s literally a 10 -15 mins drive without a VPN.

Using there different websites, it all shows the other state. Fabulous! However, one has a breakdown and it all shows the preferred state except 1 section: it shows mine. Country isn’t an area of concern at this time (may be in the future) so the US is ok. What state that’s detected is important.

How thorough are detectors that companies use to track IP addresses?

This is the section below (this is where I am clueless about different sections shown). How important is it?

I hope I am making sense. Thank you for your help!

You don’t need to.

I have an IP Address location question.

Which likely accurately gives you the country.

The geo-location of the IP is irrelevant in case of copyright notices.

my IP is correct/showing where I want it to be.

You just need to check what your real IP is suppose to be and then just make sure it’s not that. If you’re connecting to a different country, then just checking the country is enough.

Is what I use to check my IP and location, dnsleaktest.com
to verify there’s no dnsleak .

I’m assuming you’re doing this because you want to work somewhere you aren’t supposed to. Its not going to work. There’s way too many things that can go wrong that will reveal your actual location. And even if you had a bulletproof setup, corporate networks are getting smarted. More and more network management software has VPN detection software.

I build custom VPN hardware for overseas work. DM me and let’s solve your issue.

Kill switches fail way too often. Kill switches leak. Kill switches take time to react.

Why you want a VPN router with strict PBR. Can prevent leaking altogether by ridding default gateway and making static routes to VPN entry IP’s only. No VPN, no connection.

Thank you!

Unfortunately, due to a few recent law changes, some companies that contract self/sub contractors will no longer employ people that live in certain states. That’s why I worry about what ip address they detect (those that live or even visited California last year went to check messages while one holiday and we’re immediately locked out/fired due to their IP address). MA and NJ have now enacted similar laws. NY may soon follow, as well as some countries in the EU.

I will certainly look into everything you have suggested. I truly appreciate your detailed response!

I also checked out the last link you provided. Interesting enough, it detects what I want it to, as well as another state, but no mention of the state I don’t want it to show. Thank you!!

How do you read the DNS tool, as well as some of the other posted? What exactly are you looking for that tells you if there’s a leak or not?

There are definitely ways they’re catching people. BUT! there are also ways to combat it as well. It is a cat and mouse game. As for VPN, having VPN hardware is the best way to protect oneself. Most people are relying on corporations to protect them. Not smart. Have your own setup and don’t ally with any VPN providers. Tunnel, tunnel, and more tunnel! Personal point to point, peer to peer.

Yea but ISP will switch IP state to state all the time. Sometimes I’m placed in Colorado, sometimes in Texas. They can’t prove you aren’t in your state just in IP alone, or at least I don’t think so.

Do note the organization and ISP though, if they don’t reflect normal residential ISP, it might still get flagged for manual review.
