How should I use Unraid to browse with my VPN? (Mullvad)

I use Mullvad VPN on my Win 10 PC with Chrome & Firefox. I normally have uBlock running, but would like to unblock pages that require it, or that I want to support with ads. However, I also don’t want malicious ads infecting my system.

I also use Mullvad to get around geo-restrictions on ‘you can read X many articles this month’ sites.

What’s the simplest way to use Unraid and take advantage of Mullvad’s (or another VPN like PIA’s) multiple servers and browse while ‘safely’ allowing ads. I am not planning on doing any banking or shopping with this, just browsing news or info sites.

I hoped that the Mullvad browser docker would have their VPN client built-in so I can quickly switch VPN servers, but it does not seem to work that way. I don’t even see in settings how to add my Mullvad account number to sign in through the Mullvad browser docker.

Thanks in advance., Let me know if I should post in r/Mullvad instead.

I have no experience with your vpn or the docker in question. I’m only commenting this because in 3hours no one has commented with specific info.

But it does sound like you have this working on your PC, I see no reason beyond the resource hit that you couldn’t build a Windows VM on Unraid and have that be your tool, adjusting it as needed without impacting your main workstation.

Why are you using your server to browse the internet…

Install the Firefox docker (multiple times over - you will have to change port numbers) and then install the Mullvad plugin on each one

As long as you set each instance to use a different endpoint, you should have nearly unlimited access

Then install the browser sync plugin and use it to keep all browsers in sync with each other

Thanks, I look into VM’s in Unraid. I had used VirtualBox on the PC to run another copy of Win 10 Pro with Firefox for browsing shady sites or just allowing all ads and website scripts. I had been following SpaceInvaderOne’s videos and saw the ones he did on dockers vs. a full VM (not having to install an OS to run a browser with a docker) and thought to use that to browse the occasional website. I’m new to dockers, (and Unraid, and to anything non-Windows) so I thought there was a simple way to do it.

And since Mullvad (who provides the VPN service I use) came out with a browser, I thought it would let me simply switch servers the same way the Mullvad Windows program lets me switch.

Since I use Mullvad’s VPN service on the PC, to get around geo-restrictions and ‘you have read X number of articles already’ news sites, I thought to use their Mullvad Browser to browse. I also wanted to allow scripts and ads on some sites to support the site owners.

I thought that doing this through an Unraid docker would keep my main PC free of targeted ads and other unscrupulous web crap, I basically wanted to run a ‘VM Lite’ if a docker browser would let me do that without having to install another OS in a VM to do that to save on server CPU resources.

Thanks. I was looking at the Mullvad browser docker because I thought it would let me switch VPN servers to get around ‘You’ve seen X number of pages already’ sites, since I already use Mullvad as a regular VPN anyway. (it seems the Mullvad Browser doesn’t let you quick-switch VPN servers like their Windows VPN client does. If Mullvad had an ‘Unraid client’ to let me quick-switch VPN servers, I’d have gone with Firefox from the get-go.

(Oops, I forgot to hit the ‘post’ button yesterday, sorry for late reply)

Setup VPN on your router then your entire network will be run thru it

I could set the location of one VPN server in Firefox as a SOCKS proxy (I did that with PIA VPN a long time ago) but wanted the ability to switch VPN servers easily if needed.

I did this for a while. I have a separate router connected to the ISP’s router, with my router having guest connections for the wifi lights and IOT stuff, plus my PC and server on a different network.

But I would like to be able to switch VPN servers quickly if needed (again, for sites that limit the number of articles you can view, or for geo-restricted sites), so I was hoping the Mullvad Browser would have a way to switch servers.

Is there some other Unraid docker / app that would let me switch VPN server locations with a click?

How many simultaneous connections does Mullvad allow?

Looks like they allow 5 for a paid account. (edit)
