Hi so I recently have setup a PC running Windows 10 pro that I plan to use as a server for file storage, VMs, Game servers etc hence why I’d rather use Windows 10.
I would like to setup a VPN that’s hosted on this PC that will allow me to connect from my laptop when I’m away and give me access to shared drives and RDP on my home network, what would be the best/easier solution for this?
Easiest is definitely Tailscale (which uses Wireguard) or Zerotier but I run Wireguard on an Archer C7 because hub and spoke is good enough for me.
Zerotier saved my ass in a big way when everything went remote and I needed RDP access now but I also had to run a relay (called a moon) on a VPS to get acceptable latency on some connections. Just something you might run into.
When I switched to Wireguard everything got a heck of a lot snappier, easily twice as responsive. I haven’t tried Tailscale because my setup is complete now but I trust the underlying tech.
This is the way. You definitely want to virtualize whatever you use (wireguard or openvpn based solutions would be my recommendation). That way you can always move it somewhere else without having to rebuild it, snapshot it, etc.
