Home VPN for remote work - Which routers to choose?

Hi Everyone,
I’d appreciate some advice as I’m new to this sort of thing. My company has recently required me to work from a specific country whereas previously I could work from anywhere.

My plan is to purchase two GlInet routers to act as Wireguard client and server. I will keep the client router with me and set up the server router at a family member’s house.

Can anyone advise the best routers to choose from? It looks like two Opal’s would work for my set up but I want to make sure I have the best experience and don’t mind paying slightly more if the Beryl or Slate works better for my needs.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: Thanks all, I’ve gone for the Brume 2 + Beryl AX.

Slate AX would be my recommendation if you’re okay with the cost. Capable of higher wireguard speeds and extremely flexible for other options like tailscale and zerotier.

I have over 100 clients using dual Slate AX setups and they’ve been absolutely rock solid.

I have Slate AX for both home and away and seems to do the job fine.

Why not take a look at their specs and if you have money pay for faster, if not don’t.

Edit: here you go, I looked up the comparison page, you can compare and decide what works best for your price point.

Opals are not the newest routers. I’d recommend a Brume 2 and a Beryl AX for server and travel routers, respectively.

You should go check out r/digitalnomad pinned posts. It can be trickier than just setting up wireguard.

I’m using Shadow as a Wireguard server (OpenVPN performance was awful), and accessorily a Opal as a Wireguard client

I’ve got a Beryl AX and seems to be great. I contemplated the Slate AX because of the faster WireGuard speeds. However 99% of my use cases will be when I’m traveling and will most likely be bottled necked by whatever internet connection I have out in the wild

I have a Flint at home, a Slate AX for the road, and another Slate AX at a second home in another country. All of them work flawlessly.

Be careful, if the IT department at your company are serious about it and know what they are doing it won’t be that simple to hide your location.

Two Opals would work fine for your setup.
This is mainly due to your internet speed.

I am using a Shadow at a family members house which is plenty fast enough as they have a home 5G router that is only good for about 50Mb/sec up, which is my download speed, and the Shadow can do that with Wireguard. The Shadow is small, and uses almost no power. I have it wired into their router using an Ethernet cable as it cuts down the latency.

I run the latest OpenWrt firmware and not GL iNet firmware, as I run it 3 VPN servers on it, running: Wireguard, OpenVPN and SoftEther.

Sometimes, Wireguard and OpenVPN are blocked at some of the places I visit and SoftEther on port 443 using TCP always seems to work.

I don’t recommend the Opal as it running really old version of OpenWrt that is only support by GL iNet. I would go with one of their routers with better OpenWrt support. For less money, you can get a Shadow which has great OpenWrt support.

I just bought Brume 2 for business and Beryl AX as travel router.

Thanks for the info. Looks like those speeds really drop but I’ll have to try. Since it’s holiday time I’m going with the best travel router and equipment now;
Thanks

So your plan is to violate company policy and.possibly information privacy and protection laws …

Can you explain your setup? Wanna understand the “dual”

I’m an American who lives overseas 8 months of the year; who needs a remote job. I’m looking at a call center from my laptop which requires about 25mbs; so what is the best setup? What are the options? My parents have basic Infinity Comast at home and I have 25mps overseas but can pay extra for 50mps. Any tips?

My home internet is not super fast roughly 60 MBPs download and 15 MBPs upload, I don’t have any problems screen sharing or video calling when working here on WIFI. Is the extra Wireguard speeds overkill given the speed of my home internet? Maybe I even need to upgrade to a better internet provider as a first step?

I’m actually thinking of this as a back up.

Thanks for the advice, is there a reason you went with the Brume? Instead of just two routers? Is the Brume better optimised for acting as a server or something?
