There is this vpn provider that claims that if you change your virtual location you can save up to $4oo on flights. Has anyone ever tried this?
You really need to use a fresh (no cookies) immutable virtual machine to do this, but yes. This works for flights , rental cars, even staples.com prices change depending on where they think you are. Many many websites location price discriminate these days.
late to the party…but I used to travel often, and just opening chrome on incognito worked. I mean, if you’re in the Phillipines and you want to go from Miami to NY, prices won’t really change because the market in the USA is not going to adjust just because you’re buying a ticket in the Phillipines. However, for international flights, I have seen some differences, and the most, was 150 dollars. Then again, though, I used vpns in Europe and latin America; didn’t try asia.
Here is a pro tip…when booking my apartment in Spain, i simply used google.com.mx to find apartments because then the listing came in spanish, and of course these catered to latin americans who can’t really afford the high usd or european prices. Yes, you have to do a search in spanish, but you can go to any of the subreddits and ask people to help you translate or google translate works sometimes. I ended up getting an apartment for 70 a night instead of 100 the night. This can work in France, Italy, Germany, etc. Somehow businesses adjust their prices on the market so many times a google search from the phillipines or latin america, might yield you a lower price.
This reminded of a story I read in 2012 about how Orbitz was using browser detection to steer Mac users towards fancier, more expensive hotels, on the assumption that Mac users tend to have more money. I don’t know if they’re still doing that. It’s also possible that other businesses have since copied the idea, but again I don’t know.
It can, I know airline flight prices vary by many different factors. Changing Location, and being a first time user of the site (delete cookies) could have an impact.
I did it. I wanted a flight from Malaysia to L.A and rates were CRAZY.
So asked one of by friend he told me to follow these steps:
- Connect to PureVPN and use U.S (in most cases U.S have the cheapest tickets)
- Clear your browser cookies and open incognito window and go to Expedia.no and check the price by changing your i.p.
- Always follow the same sets while looking for cheap ticket
How does the process works? I mean, which are the requirements in order to get price as cheap as possible?
This hack has been dead for 10 years. Search for the AMA from Scott’s cheap flights, they mentioned it
lol. Me and my family are planning on flying down to Hawaii next winter. My dad was looking at ticket prices, and its about $1k per ticket out of Seattle. So, jokingly, my dad looks at ticket prices in Canada, cause that’s an ez drive for us. Tickets were $600 per.
How do I use VPN to find flights to Europe?
Wouldn’t running your broswer in Incognito or Private Browsing mode (in addition to going through the VPN) be simpler/easier than using a VM in this case where browser cookies are your concern? Or just clear your (relevant) cookies before revisiting the airline website via VPN.
Not everyone has a VM setup and ready to use.
btw, airb&b’s promotional plan changes via vpn
Thanks for the confirmation. I’ll do some research of my own now.
This is very insightful. Thanks man I really appreciate. I’m gonna give it a try for my next trip.
Thats genious on orbit’s part.
And then how were rates?
All I know is that you get a VPN and change your location. Like /u/JeffTheNeko said that prices varies from region to region.
If you just do that there is a smaller chance (especially over time) that it will work because of browser fingerprinting, especially if you are running windows or even a Mac. If you use virtual box and have a couple of immutable linux or BSD VM’s you can just change the size of the vm screen and you get a different fingerprint. Not hard to do and worth the work if it saves $$$ (I think). I saw an article about a year ago that said Argentina and Russia had the cheapest car rental and flight rates. Whatever you do don’t look like your running a Mac in NY or LA.
Yes, it does work. And I’m surprised people don’t mention it.
And then how were rates?
it was like above $2000 when i was connected to Malaysia and when I was connected to Detroit it was under $600.
