Hi,
I have a Pixel 8 Pro since launch and always use the included Google VPN. Are there any disadvantages to use this “free” VPN permanently? Thanks.
Hi,
I have a Pixel 8 Pro since launch and always use the included Google VPN. Are there any disadvantages to use this “free” VPN permanently? Thanks.
I use it, and swap back and forth between it and Proton VPN. I’d suggest reading through the FAQ section here and making a decision.
VPN by Google One leverages advanced cryptographic techniques to ensure that no one, not even Google, can associate your network traffic with your account or identity. In addition, your network traffic and IP address will never be logged, and Google will never use the VPN connection to track, log, or sell your online activity.
That said I still probably wouldn’t use Google One for pirating, for example. Depends how much you want to trust google I guess, but if you’re already using Google services, on a Google phone and operating system etc…
Disadvantages.
(1) Slight battery drain. Not a big issue.
(2) Overhead data hog. I have to turn the VPN off when I have a poor cell signal in order to open web sites or apps that require a reliable data connection. Otherwise they won’t open.
(3) Can’t pick location for VPN. A lot of web sites or apps that require location data think I’m in CA. (Not a big deal. Just annoying for apps like Home Depot that auto select my local store.) Google One also does not let me stream out of area NFL games. (Other VPNs enable this.)
(4) The VPN makes me deeper into selling my soul to Google…
Advantages. Better than no VPN. Phone is more secure to malware or personal data collectors (other than Google).
For personal use, when I have to use a hotel or airport hotspot (or any other connection where I don’t trust the lan) I use it. It’s on my phone where as you pointed out Google already knows exactly what I’m looking at with or without a VPN … And I would much rather trust Google instead of a random (possibly monitored) hotspot .
As others said, for anything where your issue is beyond the lan or where the actions would be illegal, I wouldn’t use a personally identifiable device at all and would rely on the shadiest VPN provider… Or better yet VPS provider and I’ll setup my own VPN or proxy from there… or use it directly as a seed box.
But if you simply want to download torrents and deflect lawyers to a no log VPN company, then Shop around, some services even allow you to port forward through the VPN !
Glad it’s included with my Google one… But I wish they gave us the YouTube premium family deal instead …
I have it set to auto connect when I’m not using either my home Internet or cellular data.
I know there were concerns raised about Google seeing the information you’re trying to place behind the VPN but when using a 3rd party VPN, it’s blocked. I suppose it comes down to why you are using a VPN. If it’s to get around blocked content, I personally don’t see a downside to it. I have heard some friends complain about speed but I don’t personally believe speeds are an issue unless you are doing high quality streaming.
I’ve been using PIA VPN and its been great. I don’t like to spend a lot of money on apps personally but purchasing this app was a great decision and the app works flawlessly for me.
You have been using a google phone. Your system and browser are associated your google account. What’s the point if google still use VPN to monitor your traffic which is highly illegal in US and EU…
Google vpn doesn’t bypass websites that are blocked by employer like Netflix for example. I also couldn’t change the location of the server
I use the Google VPN for some torrenting.
As long as they don’t give it to my ISP I’m good
Data and Wi-Fi speeds will be a bit slower about it
I had a “Err_connection_reset” error a few hours ago, locking me out of web connections on my Pixel 8 for about an hour while troubleshooting. I went through a checklist of 4-5 possible solutions and wound up deactivating my free Google VPN. Bummer…I don’t think the phone/vpn liked this update today but all is running well.

The Google One VPN, included in some Google One plans, isn’t technically free, but bundled with the storage service. While it does have some benefits, there are also several potential drawbacks to using it permanently, especially compared to dedicated VPN providers:
Limited features:
Privacy concerns:
Performance:
Price:
Alternatives:
Overall:
The Google One VPN is a basic tool for occasional use on mobile devices, especially if you already utilize the bundled storage. However, for permanent use, its limitations and potential privacy concerns might make dedicated VPN providers a better choice for most users seeking enhanced security, flexibility, and anonymity.
Ultimately, the decision depends on your individual needs and priorities. If privacy and advanced features are crucial, consider exploring dedicated VPN services. If basic mobile protection and you utilize other Google One features, the bundled VPN might suffice.
I hope this information helps you make an informed decision!
What are you using it for?
It should keep your information from your Internet provider but with Google instead. And as with all VPNs, a slight battery drain. But since it’s Google, I’m not sure it’s quite as trustworthy as the other lead VPNs, but it is free.
I haven’t really used it since I have Nord, so maybe someone else will have a better outlook of their experience.
It isn’t privacy friendly what so ever. Instead of giving your ISP your data you are now just handing it over to Google while on other VPNs they don’t save anything no nothing you do on the VPN can be traced back to you
Google announced they are shutting down Google VPN. I am very disappointed. If Google VPN was able to used on laptops it probably be more popular.
I’ve been mailing google for a month now to fix my one vpn on the phone, crickets… I don’t even get a reply back
I have no issues 24-7 running that.
Has anyone tried to use this VPN in China? Can this VPN bypass the Great firewall?
Is it free for P7 users too?
