I thought Google mentioned there is a free VPN service they themselves are offering, so how do I get it? Or am I just reading their explanation wrong?
If it comes down to it, what VPN do y’all recommend that’s easy on battery life and works fine for free?
Try going into your settings and search VPN. Mines in network settings
I would go with private internet access, it gets rid of all the ads in the apps and on websites.
I would also go for Private Internet Access (PIA) or you set up a VPN to your own router. That is usually enough for free wify access i.e. in hotels to be on the safe side.

VPN has been discontinued. It is offered now as part of Pixel 8 (and Pixel 7 after OS update, which has not happened yet on my P7). Everything else is SOL.
I have dropped it altogether and have switched to ExpressVPN which I have found to be faster, with more features, available on all my platforms, and covers unlimited devices. Google VPN was good because it was free but for not much else.
Google One VPN isn’t really discontinued; it’s just part of the Google One subscription now. You can get it if you subscribe to Google One’s 2TB plan or higher. It’s not a separate, free service though.

Only Google would feel the need to specify a part of the main UI for an application that is used often, then suddenly kill the application and leave the UI button. Seriously why even have a VPN button on the pull down menu if it’s always unavailable.

Agree 100% ExpressVPN is worth every penny. It’s on all of my devices and works great.
It was never free lol and in fact it is now free for Pixel users so not sure where you are getting your information
In order to use it you had to have a 2tb google storage subscription so instead of charging people Google has made it an exclusive pixel feature going forward which is amazing.
I used it when it was part of the package deal and I use it now and it is fantastic… especially now that it is free.

In addition to that Google emailed me in April about them removing the VPN as a benefit of my Google One subscription.

I am still a Google One subscriber but the VPN feature disappeared on June 20 just as was announced. I was also using the VPN on my laptop and it stopped working too. I had to uninstall the program from Windows and the Android app removed itself from my phone. I was left without a VPN of any sort and so purchased ExpressVPN which is turning out to be much better.
I don’t have a Pixel 8 which is supposed to include VPN and so far Google has not provided the OS update for Pixel 7 that is supposed to build it back in. Nor do I have cellular service from Google since I live outside the service area. I’m not going to wait for Google to update the P7 since software companies in general have been notorious for abandoning all but the most recent hardware.
Right, because intuitive UI is all about reading documentation. Also, I know how to finagle the VPN to turn on, so nothing to figure out. Your condescending reply was pretty moot, especially given that I replied to a comment that shares the same way I active it now that the dedicated buttons don’t work.
