For those looking into getting a VPN for French content, a word of advice about ExpressVPN

Apparently they do for Amazon, though?

I think that there’s this notion that because you’re using a VPN, you’re protected from scrutiny, maybe? Since it’s a VPN it’s “disguising” your traffic. Which is true to an extent, but if some big media company comes knocking to your provider saying “hey, we see illicite activity, cough up or pay the price”.

I think overall it’s probably harmless, but whatever, still would like to know.

Honestly, if Amazon is able to detect a VPN, I’m sure most streaming services would as well if they truly cared. If it really becomes an issue then I’ll stop. Hopefully by then I’ll be able to watch French TV in my region.

I don’t think they’re saying that data is being stored. Just that they recognize their own VPN when it’s being used.

No they don’t, Amazon simply detects and blocks the VPN - it has nothing to do with storing data.

I see it more akin to buying retroconsoles made in China with with old games that you can’t play in any other way short of purchasing the original cartridges. If no company will make it accessible then I don’t really feel like I’m depriving anyone of any revenue. 99% of French TV is not available in my region. If it were I would gladly pay a monthly subscription. But because it is not available then I honestly don’t feel so bad watching it through a VPN.
