Ever since my family subscribed to the SurfEasy VPN provider, our internet speeds have been cut by up to 80%, even with VPN disabled

So a month or so ago, my family subscribed to SurfEasy, because VPNs are nice, right? Ever since then, our network speeds have slowed considerably. We pay for 25mbps, which, I understand can’t and won’t always be attainable, but when 5mbps becomes the norm? That’s unacceptable.

I’ve read through threads like this before, and the general consensus is: it’s the VPN. So I decided to do some tests using speedtest.net on various devices with VPN enabled and disabled, and the results were very similar: download speeds between 4.5 and 5.7 mbps.

Router/Modem is Netgear C7000 (also says AC1900… ???), which is a $250 router/modem combo. I’m really not sure what to do at this point, but for my parents and me, 5mbps is unacceptable since I have 2 online summer school courses and both parents work from home often. Hard and soft resets to the router don’t help. I’m really trying to NOT have to contact Comcast, but will I have to?

goto 192.168.100.1 then click on the diagnostics page, and see what your signal levels are like. It may must be a coincidence that your cable degraded when you started using VPN.
Your downstream signal levels should be within ±10, SNR greater than 35, and up stream signal should be less than 51. You cant see up stream SNR on your end, only at the cable company head end can that be viewed.

Hey there! So we do a lot of speedtesting and I can say for pretty sure that it’s not us that’s the issue. We have been working really hard to ensure this sort of thing doesn’t occur.

If you want to email us we can put you in touch with one of our support team and they might be able to chat about what else it could be apart from your VPN.

The problem has been occurring on and off with both wired and wireless connections.
