Just curious, as when looking into the eero Secure+ service briefly, I noticed the encrypt.me service is “becoming StrongVPN” and their homepage states “Encrypt.me is combining forces with StrongVPN to bring you superior VPN service and features. If you’re an existing customer, you can still login to your Encrypt.me service below. If you’re looking for a VPN service, head to StrongVPN to get started.”
So I guess my question is… does anyone at eero know how this might impact the eero Secure+ service? Will Encrypt.me continue to be a partner? And if the new owners don’t want it and remove it, will eero offer a refund of sorts to users in such an event? Curious what happens in that kind of situation, realizing of course this probably hasn’t happened yet so may be completely new territory for eero.
I would be curious about StrongVPN and how well audited their “zero logging” of connection and activity along with if they use RAM disk servers. Not that I have a tinfoil hat or anything, but aren’t more highly regarded VPNs located outside of the US?
Not updated for at least year for iOS. On Android it’s worse; versions varies depending on the specific Android device but doesn’t list any version numbers at all. PC and Mac versions have major software issues. Microsoft has blocked it from Windows and Mac version is more than a year out of date. I’m not touching this so-called “Strong” VPN, and would never recommend it.
This review is very scary, the reason, per Apple Tech Support, there is no recent update for their iOS and Mac client is all submitted updates contained Trojan malware. It’s also why Microsoft is now blocking them in Windows.
I just got some Eeros and have been on the fence regarding Secure+. I think this news pushes me to not get it, at least until it partners with a better service.
My own experience with encrypt.me and StrongVPN, for whatever it’s worth…
As a Secure+ subscriber, I tried to use encrypt.me on my Windows 10 laptop for months. Some of the time it was fine, but often it lost connection and took my wifi connection down with it as it strained to re-connect. So it wasn’t just not working, but disruptive to anything else I tried to do. The Android app on my phone wouldn’t connect, either.
I had lengthy exchanges with encrypt.me tech support during a couple separate periods spanning three or four months. To their credit, they were always responsive and friendly, but nothing solved the problem. Given the problems with the Android app, I suggested it might be an account-level problem but they assured me it wasn’t.
Finally, in late August, the encrypt.me guy says he’s giving me a 60-day trial with their “sister company,” StrongVPN, to test that out and see if it’s having the same problems.
StrongVPN has worked flawlessly on my laptop, and I’m about to try the Android app. Encrypt.me continued to struggle on my laptop (though I see there’s a new version, maybe that will fix it) and my Android phone still won’t connect at all.
I’m somewhat in limbo now; nobody from encrypt.me has followed up and my “trial” is still going a couple weeks past its 60-day period.
/u/d19dotca Thanks for posting! I have double checked with our team and they confirmed that nothing is changing with encrypt.me in regards to eero Secure. Existing and new Secure+ subscribers will be able to use encrypt.me as a VPN. Nothing will be changing on our end.
My guess is that eero would replace encrypt.me or adopt Strong VPN if they can work out the money thing.
Some of this sounds odd though. I mean, all the comments seem to indicate Strong VPN is behind the times on updates and latest OS support. Perhaps they are going to continue to use Encrypt.me behind the scenes and just rebrand it as “the new and improved” Strong VPN?
Anyway, I decided to a while back to dump encrypt.me and get a different VPN. I like ProtonVPN and Mullvad these days. If you’re just concerned about encrypting your data from your ISP and not necessarily hiding your IP address, Cloudflare Warp is quite solid.
… or mullvad? Mullvad is the VPN underneath the hood for Malwarebytes Privacy (VPN) and Mozilla VPN. Both are solid though I personally like the Mullvad apps better.
Yes. While I cannot go into specifics, I have been involved in several cases in which US-based VPNs turned over their data to any authority requesting it. Demand orders were even required.
My takeaway overall was that there is almost no point at all to running a VPN if it is US-based.
Would rather have Eero work like every other router and just let us use any VPN rather than charging extra money to use their very weak single-supplier version.
Why a company with Amazon’s near-endless resources keeps partnering with weak suppliers (for ad-blocking, for DNS, for VPNs) is fully beyond my ken. They’re in a near-unique position to do it well themselves, but instead they keep half-assing it with third party suppliers.
As a user of secure+ I’d like to see a more robust VPN option. You are basically saying you are going to continue offering a product that is no longer supported. Seems lazy and… not secure. The encrypt.me mobile app doesn’t seem to work on my phone anymore - it just says “connecting” when activated, but never connects. This just seems like evidence of dwindling development.
I think secure+ users need a thorough reassurance why you are still using encrypt.me and evidence that it will continue to be developed/supported. Otherwise please move to an active VPN company.
I’m happy with 1password and Malwarebytes. Just would like to see a better VPN option moving forward.
I hope you are able to provide more information other than just saying it will continue to be the option (regardless of it’s seemingly planned obsolescence).
I didn’t necessarily mean that as a criticism. It seems entirely possible that I’m in limbo precisely because these products are merging - that my trial would just become my new account.
