How realistic and safe is it that you create your own VPN for complete anonymous browsing?
Think about this. How do you achieve anonymity through a VPN?
By dozens or hundreds of others using the same VPN server as you.
If you’re the only person ever to communicate with the VPN server it’s pretty easy to put 2 and 2 together.
Yes, your data from your PC to the VPN server will be encrypted end to end. BUT at the VPN headend that data gets unencrypted, sent over the clear to its destination.
So authorities see a cyber attack from some unknown VPN server. Who was communicating with that server at that time, they might ask. Oh, it’s just Jim down the street! He’s the only person ever to communicate with that malicious VPN server, it’s him.
Building your own VPN will still have you as the owner of the VPN server/endpoint.
Just put a Raspberry pi at a fast food restaurant
Completely anonymous browsing does not exist.
When using a VPN you move the trust from your ISP to the VPN host.
But ok, lets say you want to divert your traffic to have access to content you cannot access from your local ISP and you do not want to use commercial VPN providers.
I like to have access to content that only is available for US citizens (I am from EU) so this is what I did.
In the US there are some hosting companies who sell cheap VPS, I got one of those $15 a year things with enough bandwidth. I installed OpenVPN server and use that as my VPN endpoint.
In the end they could see what content I access from that VPS.
Depends on what you need it for. Shielding your data at Starbucks? Or obfuscating your location?
I only use a VPN so my ISP can’t see what I’m doing.
If that’s your goal then I do think there’s value.
This is great starting place :).
So you’re asking about anonymous browsing. If you set up your own private VPN you are not going to be anonymous. Please note that “anonymous” is not in the acronym VPN.
While VPNs can be used for privacy they are also very important for ease of access and distributed computing architectures.
Here’s another example, you can set your router to be a VPN and connect to your home from far away and browse as if you’re safely at home. This is another excellent use of VPN technology
Depending on your needs, either relatively easy or somewhat complicated. If you want moderate privacy, there’s hundreds of guides on google for making your own vpn on the cloud.
However as far as truly anonymous, it’s not exactly practical to obtain this without some sacrifices. Theoretically you could sign up for an account with any one of the cloud providers under an assumed name with falsified credentials on a double layer virtual machine, and then reroute your vpn traffic from there over three or more countries on a tor type network, one of which would ideally be a non extraditing country. But the main drawback to all of this is difficulty to set up and the speed of your connection. Every step along the way adds more to process until you’ve accumulated so much latency in your connection that you question whether it’s worth it, but it’s nearly impossible to track you and obtain evidence to prosecute you with a route like this.
It really comes down to the question of what exactly you’re trying to hide and from who. If it’s just your isp you don’t want nosing around in your business then sure just make your own vpn on the cloud. If you’re trying to hack a high profile company or government agency, then you probably shouldn’t be asking the sub how digital forensics work and instead of taking someone’s word for it I’d recommend studying how cyber criminals are caught from any number of the free forensics courses online.
Easy. Two problems. Buying a single static IP direct you have to register it under your name. Buying the use of an IP for the purpose of a VPN will blacklist you from a ton of online content; Same as VPN companies. If you have money, which you wouldn’t be asking this if you did, just buy a block or some IPv6 and setup a proxy to IPv4 instead of a vpn. Buy multiple VPSs in different countries and set them up to either load balance or give yourself a variety. TL;DR Don’t go down this path unless you know what you’re doing or want to learn through trial and error.
Anyone actually posting a fuckng tutorial?
Create one using Amazon ec2 free tier and openvpn!
Is it possible to create a tunneled network between me and internet
Follow up question, say I’m ip banned from a discord server but I really like this server and want to rejoin but I can’t, not even on a new account because, yk, ip ban. Would creating my own vpn and changing my ip be realistic?
Neighbor using WiFi definitely creates liability for the owner of the WiFi and as the ISP subscriber, which is one of the many reasons we PW protect our networks If you don’t believe me, research liability for copyright infringement when downloading a ton of protected content- this is also why schools had to disable the use of sharing services like Napster, it’s because the internet “ owner” incurs liability for what crosses his network.
Why do you think a VPN will make you anonymous?
Okay it’s pretty easy I saw people on YouTube doing that easy but why, if it’s cause of logs or worried of the vpn company leaking your data just chose a no log vpn, and like other people mentioned it’s pretty suspicious if only one person is on a vpn server, try looking into a proxy see if it fits your needs
Just download Tails for complete anonymous browsing
Apt install squid or set up a tor exit node then use moxie’s tor singlehop
