I just purchased a subscription. Forgive me if I’m not tech savvy but this is required for me to use NordVPN. Isn’t this the opposite of what having a VPN is for? I thought Nord was no log/ ram servers or whatever.
That’s a warning from your phone that a VPN may log your activity. NordVPN specifically does not do this. Just accept the popup and don’t worry about it
Ok so NordVPN wants to work right? But your big boy phone is like “hey man are you sure you trust this guy? He’s trying to act like a vpn”
And you do trust nord so you say yes and let him do his job
In most networked devices, including phones, tablets, and computers, network traffic passes through interfaces. These interfaces are software abstractions that represent network connections, such as eth0 for Ethernet, wlan0 for Wi-Fi, or cellular interfaces like ppp0 for mobile data. These interfaces handle the sending and receiving of network packets.
What NordVPN does is interact with the iOS operating system to create a virtual network interface. This is typically a TUN (network tunnel) or TAP (network tap) interface. In iOS, this is done through the Network Extension framework, which allows VPN apps to create and manage VPN configurations.
When you allow NordVPN to add VPN configurations, it’s essentially asking permission to create this virtual interface and set up routing rules. Once set up, the operating system is instructed to route all (or selected) network traffic through this new virtual interface instead of the default ones.
The virtual interface acts as a tunnel. When your device sends a packet, instead of going directly out through the Wi-Fi or cellular interface, it first goes through this VPN interface. The VPN software then encrypts the packet and encapsulates it within another packet (usually UDP or TCP) destined for the VPN server. This is why the prompt warns that all network activity may be filtered or monitored - because all of your traffic is being routed through NordVPN’s servers.
On the VPN server side, the process is reversed. The outer packet is stripped away, the inner packet is decrypted, and then sent out to its original destination. Return traffic follows the reverse path. The warning about filtering and monitoring is important because, theoretically, the VPN provider could inspect your traffic. This is why VPN provider trustworthiness is crucial. Reputable providers like NordVPN use strong encryption and have strict no-logging policies to protect user privacy.
May be filtered or monitored is the general statement when you add a configuration to your phone. Nord still maintains their no log policy. This is just a general disclaimer by Apple
It’s expected; It’s a special system notifications from iOS that an app is about to add a VPN connection to your phone. Because it’s such a consequential thing to adda a VPN connection to your phone (because you have to trust the company behind it; they can potentially now see everything going in and out of your phone that isn’t encrypted, and even some metadata of the stuff that is encrypted). So for the same reason that a special interface comes up when you’re buying an app or in-app purchase in iPhone, because it involves real money and a purchase, VPN system dialog also comes up so you’re made aware of this change. By App Store guidelines, it’s not allowed for apps to mimic system dialogs like this to desensitize people to it.
IOS has some weird security things, you need to add a VPN file before it connects it just normal . Unlike windows and android where it just show message to connect vpn
Someday they will add innovation easy to connect vpn
Press allow, and don’t take candy from strangers.
Shouldn’t one try to add VPN on iphone through it’s settings such as on iPhone there it’s Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > VPN > Add VPN configurations, in order to add NordVPN credentials?
say yes or you can’t use it
Imagine you have a special toy car (let’s call it a VPN car) that can hide where it’s driving. When NordVPN wants to add its configurations, it’s like giving the car a new map to follow. All the things you do with your toy car might be watched or changed while using this new map. Choosing “Allow” means you’re okay with using this new map, while “Don’t Allow” means you want to keep using the old map for now.
So a VPN allows you to route all your traffic through a third party, encrypted. This hides all your activity from your ISP and hides your location/identity from the sites you’re connecting to.
The downside is that the VPN provider now knows every site you visit.
That’s what this is warning you about. That you’re routing all your activity through a new third party and they can monitor you at will.
I agree with this big boy.
And easy to disconnect from the vpn. So many times I’ve clicked disconnect from vpn via the vpn client only for it to turn back on on iOS.
For me it’s weird if the system is not very explicit, when adding an UVM connection, this is no small deal security wise. So in my wealth, the weird behavior is android and windows, not iOS.
This is where the VPN will be added if you allow it in the prompt. From a user experience point of view, its much easier to say allow to fund then to add it manually.
