hi, I’ve never had a VPN but I’m about to be an expat in Japan so I wanted to ask here what service you all would recommend. It’s mostly for checking my bank and brokerage accounts, maybe accessing netflix…etc. thank you guys!
I just use nordvpn, but using a VPN just to check bank accounts is overkill IMO. I’ve been logging into my Schwab + Vanguard accounts from abroad for nearly 4 years at this point (counting the time I’ve been an expat or digital nomad) and I’ve never even gotten as much as a warning about it. also I use my Schwab debit card multiple times a month in foreign countries so they definitely know I live abroad.
Im using Surfshark. No complaints yet.
I’ve used NordVPN for 3 1/2 years now. Never had a problem with my bank or credit card website access even when not using the VPN. I have it mostly because my work which is based in the US blocks foreign IPs from accessing email and I never told them I moved. I also use it to access Netflix and other streaming content.
I rent a US-based VPS for around 50 cents a month and use it to run a WireGuard client, connecting through it for my USA traffic needs.
Mullvad $5 monthly
Proven audits and federal govt raids - the company keeps zero logs
Can also pay with crypto

best VPN to use from Japan to access U.S.

I use ExpressVPN. Recently Netflix is telling me I’m not in the home network when I switch my VPN to the U.S., so it looks like the password crackdown is in effect. Works for all other stuff though.
I’m not from the U.S. but I’m always using surfshark for streaming and my country’s bank account app (it doesn’t work in Japan for some reason)
Mullvad lets you pay by the month for the equivalent of 5 euro a month
I’ve used Surfshark to access European and US content without a problem.
Well I use Nord. Use it to access Vanguard, US Netflix etc. but also now that I can put it on my little Apple TV box, I can watch US TV using my parent’s cable access
Im late but im gonna give you my answer. Windscribe. Hands down the best VPN. Worth every penny and great speeds
I use Express VPN. The yearly price is like $100. Express vpn never logs activity or devices or time. Nord vpn logs your activity.
wow thanks! I want to play it safe but sounds like I might not even need to play it that safe haha!

This is likely creating problems for you from a taxation perspective. You owe taxes in Japan but not in the US, and you should be a 1099 contract employee and not a regular employee.
Whatever you do, do not set up a company in the US to get paid through, that will all but certainly result in double taxation for you.
may i ask the name of the vps?
It’s really not a problem. I pay taxes in the us, claim FEIC on my US taxes and get nearly everything back. I also do my Japan taxes and pay for it with the money from my tax return. The only thing is I need enough cash to cover Japan Rae’s while I wait for the US taxes but I have plenty of cash on hand so not really a problem.
Ethernet servers but it was a multi year sale.
It was cheap because the monthly data was limited.
I don’t use it for streaming so it doesn’t make a difference for me.
