According to the megathread the two best choices are Proton and Mullvad. However recent discussions say that apparently Mullvad cant be used to torrent anymore.
Does this mean that Proton is my best option and only option now?

I switched from Mullvad to AirVPN, and couldn’t be happier. A 3 year subscription cost me under $90 (promotion), and there aren’t any signs of them removing port forwarding.
If you just want to grab stuff ( leech ) then Mullvad / Air / Windscribe are all good. Don’t get sucked in to Port Forwarding because it get’s mentioned. I’ve leeched for 30+ years using Transmission and never had an issue
mullvad can be used to torrent, its just that it doesnt support port forwarding which can greatly increase torrenting speed. proton does support port forwarding
Damn why no one ever mentions Windscribe still in these type of posts, literally dirty cheap and supports port forwarding, even the free version while limited to 15gb a month is still decent for small torrents or browsing
Not exactly a VPN, but Realdebrid is great.
I’m using Psiphon. It’s free to use, the vpn exe is only 7mb with no install and works great for torrenting.

Mullvad doesn’t suck, it’s a wonderful VPN, it’s just not the best for torrenting due to the lack of port forwarding.

Can you point someone (me) who has never used a VPN, and will likely be buying one this weekend (for torrenting) in the right direction to learn what I can about port forwarding and how it would apply to say, utorrent? Costs? Benefits? How?
There are a lot of groups with greater server capacity than me that have been doing it far better for longer
