Hiya - I’m going to China in 1 week, I’m staying for 14 days and will be in Shanghai, Wuxi and Chongqing/Chengdu. I’m looking for a VPN that will work when I’m on WiFi or using my local SIM card (will have to purchase).
I’ve heard of Astrill and LetsVPN do both of these work? And which is the best price for a short holiday that’s reliable?
Does anyone have any tips also for like a ~10gb plan SIM card just for the data? I was looking at getting a China Unicom one perhaps?
I am not constantly in the mainland. I have a VPN (Outline) installed on my VPS, but I mostly use free VPN.
My clients are V2rayNG and Howdy Trojan (have Igniter too). Protocols I get from https://sshocean.com, they work for 7 days and are quite fast. If you stay 2 weeks I would suggest to get a new one every 5 days or so. They install easily via QR code.
For “just install” apps I have Lantern and GoFly. Both work, I use them seldom though.
IMHO there is no need to buy anything for a short trip.
If you plan to buy a SIM (which needs full name registration these days and many places don’t accept passports) I would avoid China Mobile, unless you have a 5G phone, or a 4G phone that supports TD-LTE. Unicom has a more international standard (as far as I know). In any case, look at bands in China vs. the ones your phone supports. Surfing on Edge is no fun at all.
I would be happy to recommend Blokada 6 as a solid & privacy-friendly VPN.
Blokada is a popular ad blocker application that also offers a VPN service.
One of the main advantages of the Blokada VPN of the Blokada VPN is that it is integrated with the Blokada Adblocker, which makes things simpler. Additionally, it doesn’t keep any logs of your online activity by default, which further enhances your privacy.
Okay thanks - I’ll look into Astrill I think the price is just quite odd putting for my shorter trip - and sadly my phone doesn’t take esim so I think I’ll need to find a sim when I land. Thanks tho
The recommendation is valid…. But using VPN doesnt double data usage.
With Astrill, depending on the protocol used it should range between 5 to 10% (Openweb being closer to 5%)
Hopping on this thread, does it drop connection, and if so how often? I’m staying in China for a few months and I’m considering getting LetsVPN beforehand.
Head to Taihu lake when you’re there. Not much to eat in south or Wuxi where it’s located. Combine the Buddha statue trip and lake in one day as they’re nearby if that’s on your agenda. Plenty of nice independent coffee chains in Wuxi downtown. 1912 bar street if it’s nightlife you’re into
I was just there for 1.5 months and it dropped connections no more than 5 times during my stay. I’ll be back in a few months and you bet that’s what I’ll be using again!
Thanks! I planned on going to Turtle Head island and the Lingshan Buddha so should be good. I have my girlfriend acting as my guide, as she is from there
Mhmmm might check that - my provider doesn’t offer a good roaming package that’s worth the GB you get - I may look at others + I sent a chat invite just about the VPS stuff also thanks.
That’s great to hear then, she’s from that district so I’m staying in an apartment in Binhu - looking forward to seeing that side of China - it’s my first time outside of Europe!
