Best VPN according to Reddit in 2022

Hey guys,

With so many providers to choose from and Black Friday approaching I will look through Reddit to find out which VPN is the best. Why Reddit? I think it’s a great place to get a genuine picture, as so many of its users share opinions, reviews, and recommendations on VPNs and privacy issues. Most often redditors do not agree on the best VPN provider and in each thread you’ll read about vastly different opinions and experiences. Only one thing seems to always come up - do not trust free VPNs!

Why should you avoid free VPNs?

Just like the saying goes - if something is free, you are the product. Remember this golden rule, it definitely applies to free VPNs. Free VPNs may profit by exploiting user data for marketing purposes; bombarding users with ads; selling user data to third parties; and using users’ devices as an exit node for its other services. So, if you care about your privacy and your data, better pick a paid VPN.

VPN recommendation according to Reddit

Of course, the best VPN depends on what you as a user want to get out of it, but most often users discuss the following criterias - speed, streaming experience, privacy, security and cost.

There are some honorable mentions, such as Mullvad (r/mullvadvpn) which is excellent for privacy as it offers completely anonymous accounts (no email needed) and they also accept cash and crypto currencies. Additionally, redditors like them for their pricing plans - all of them are 5 euros. They are externally audited and transparent which earned them the trust of redditors. Surfshark (r/surfshark) is known for top speeds and they recently reached 100 locations (over 3200 servers), so it is great for streaming - according to users it unlocks many libraries, especially when using the browser extension. As for cost, the opinion on Reddit is to always look for a deal as VPN companies are almost always running a promotion, so the cheapest option might sometimes change.

Best VPN overall

While looking through the criterias, one name kept coming up - NordVPN. It might be a bit more costly, however I found a code 'unblockdeal’ and it makes the price go down rapidly.

On top of that, it excels in other criterias. According to NordVPN reviews from users on Reddit, it is mostly valued for the ability to perform well in many different use cases, meaning it offers great speeds, great protection and users are happy with streaming performance. I have also noticed that users especially recommend NordLynx protocol which is based on WireGuard manual setup. Such setup brings speeds to an excellent level and contributes to overall smooth browsing and streaming experiences.

There are several NordVPN features which according to users are the reason for it’s good performance:

  • 5400 NordVPN servers in 59 countries guarantee a large IP pool to choose from to maintain the best speeds and usability.
  • Obfuscated servers help bypass geographical restrictions (eg. censorship) by avoiding standard VPN traffic blocks.
  • Strict no-logs policies and two no-logs independent audits ensure user online privacy.
  • Threat Protection - provides an additional layer of security and safer browsing by blocking malicious websites, ads and trackers, as well as identifying files infected with malware.
  • Meshnet - feature which lets users access devices or encrypted private tunnels, hence instead of connecting to a VPN server, you can connect to other devices anywhere.

If you want to research more before making a purchase, I suggest reading up on this subreddit as well as checking out a few other:

r/VPNTorrents (if your main focus is torrenting)

These subs are the biggest and most active in VPN discussions, so you’ll definitely get some good insights. Moreover, r/VPN has a great VPN comparison table where you can get an overview of all main providers which are all rated on different criterias. Check it out and stay safe with a (paid) VPN!

TL;DR: Reddit is full of VPN discussions and is a good place to hear first hand experiences with different providers. I did a lil research and concluded that users mostly recommend Mullvad for privacy, Surfshark gets praise for speeds and streaming. Overall, the best VPN according to Reddit is NordVPN as it performs well in all of the most discussed criterias for a vpn - speed, streaming, privacy and security.

I would recommend Mullvad for anyone looking for a VPN.

Nah mullvad. I don’t trust vpns that have to sponsor everything to get their names out. if you’re good, people will end up finding out

I’ve been using Proton VPN for quite a while bow after trying others like Mullvad, Cyberghost, Vyper, Avira, Hidemyass, Freedome and a few others.
Proton made the best case for me in terms of speed and security.
Not making any advertising here but to me they provide the best overall package.
I mean who needs thousands of singles servers in 200 countries in reality? A few fast servers per country is more than enough for streaming, downloading and fast surfing.
Apart from that the main issue is the jurisdiction and how the servers are operated (ram, protocols, logs). That’s basically it.

Attached image not clear.

OVPN has been the best I’ve used thus far.

ProtonVPN is good for now.

How is surfshark anyone use them?

Windscribe and Mullvad would be the best VPNs according to Reddit users. If you want to know other VPN services then, I will prefer you must check the list and compare the best VPN services along with their features.

Best vpn is you build on your own home on RaspPi4 hardware.

Try Mozilla Private Mode. It’s pretty good

has anyone used Mozilla’s VPN? though about it?

If you are torrenting - Just go for something with top speed and not US base or the country, there dont have to give up log files. Dont go creating a VPN to torrent because you are still using your WAN IP or if you use a VPS they will notify you.

If you want to stream different countries Netflix,Disney Plus or any other US base streaming serivce I recommend NordVPN or Express or Surfshark. Could be more that works but these are the 3 I know for sure. I tested alot of them out and alot of IPs of these companies get blocked by these streaming service. For example I tested PIA and some of there servers were getting blocked from streaming and some not,

If you are worried about privacy. Just go create your own from your home network or a VPS.

I’ve used a bunch of them.
Cyberghost - Always had speed problems with this even in the paid tiers.

NordVPN - They failed a DNS leak test once. That was enough to quit

PIA - US Jurisdiction makes it an issue.

ExpressVPN - If you want speeds and security, this is it. Definitely the VPN which provides the fastest speeds

ProtonVPN - This is the one I use. It’s supposed to be more secure according to people smarter than me. Their UI needs some work but it’s pretty good overall. I use their email as well.

Tunnelbear - used it for a trial. wasn’t fast enough, so had to take responsibility for killing their bear.

If you want max possible speeds, go express. otherwise proton.

Adguard VPN has been the best one for me. And they have their own unique protocol that is extremely fast and obfuscated so much so, that websites don’t even detect I have a vpn. I recommend people to try it out.

For those interested how it’s protocol is different to all the big vpn providers you can just read this How the AdGuard VPN protocol works | AdGuard VPN Knowledge Base

Happy 2023!

No port-forwarding, so immediately discarded. Besides that, they most likely belong to NordVPN group (Tesonet) which would also put them out. The rest of the criteria would have to be analyzed if they implement port-forwarding some day, but as it is now simply just isn’t recommended for torrenting.

What a bunch of useless advices I used all of the vpns that are mentioned here non of them worked for me

I disagree with some “experts”. I have used F-Secure for many years, and I find their service excellent and trustworthy. Many “experts” point out one instance involving German officials obtaining logs on a customer, which F-Secure followed up and had them destroyed. What if this German customer was an arch-villain, suspected of heinous acts? Finland has always been known to be a trusted partner in Privacy. On the other hand, accolades are given to ExpressVPN, yet they are in U.S. Virgin Islands…a U.S. territory which I am sure if U.S. officials wanted logs on an average citizen, they would only need to breathe hard on Express VPN to obtain them. I would suggest to take “expert” recommendations with a grain of salt. I used ExpressVPN briefly and my Bluetooth was being constantly hacked.

I’d say be careful with VPN recommendations on reddit as well. As I’m looking through different threads, many people are using their affiliate links without disclosing them. And in some cases, I’ve even have multiple different reddit accounts using the same affiliate link. So people are making it look like one VPN is popular but really it’s the same person promoting their affiliate links (without disclosing) over and over. So be careful.

Hey reader :waving_hand: you don’t need VPN. Get router running openwrt (ex: tp-link ac1750) and install Tor client on it. Congrats! now you got totally FREE and PERMANENT privacy for ALL THE DEVICES using that tor gateway router wifi.

P.S: make sure you got at least 250mb/s internet speed packet for optimal usage :index_pointing_up::warning:
